As I was going through my wallet I noticed that I had a relatively old penny. When I looked closer I noticed that there was no letter below 1956 indicating the mint it was made at. Does anyone know the value of something like this?
The Philadelphia Mint has always been the main mint and "mint marks" were required ONLY when coins were minted at the branch mints when Philadelphia could not supply the demand. Lincoln Cents have never had a "P" Mint Mark. Even when the "P" Mint mark was implemented on all coinage in 1980. Prior to that, the only other coins which had a "P" Mint mark were the wartime nickels of 1942-1945 and the SBA Dollars of 1979. The OP's question is a valid question for beginner coin collectors and SHOULD always be asked to prevent the scammers on eBay from taking advantage of them.
I didn't know anything at all when I first started. I just had a half gallon of worn, damaged old coins. I still don't know A lot which is why I always post questions. I am getting better at taking pictures of coins though and it's fun even if they are worthless like my icon. I thought I had a bunch of 1970 small dates until I realized they all had a D so the die was different and the loop of the 9 looked like a small date. Hahaha
Well, if it doesn't have a mint mark, how do you know it is a d? If it is a 1956 with no mint mark, then it is a Philadelphia minted coin.
People keep posting on an old thread, which brings it to the list of "NEW POSTS". I look at that, not the date it was first posted. These need to go somewhere else, since they aren't "New".
