1953 is the first year to feature Queen Elizabeth II on Canadian coins. Here are a couple that feature main varieties: Shoulder Fold and No Shoulder Fold (also known as "with Strap" and "without strap", respectively).

Just started a nickel book last week. Almost full from 60 up. Great coins. Nice year too

First, thanks for pointing out one is a quarter, I wrote both were halves  (now edited).

That's a good question. I honestly don't know. I was only referring to the shoulder/no shoulder varieties. Do the quarters also have large and small date distinctions?

Sure do. Google canadian mintages. Look for varieties. My book has two slots for the 1953's. Oh see @alurid took care of it

The cent has the shoulder strap thing, and the Nickel is a mess. First year of a new issue gets a lot of attention, and changes.

if I understand correctly the 50 cents 1953 SF type was issued with large date while the NSF was issued with large and small date, see
    http://coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php?canadian_coins=50-cents-1953-1964

For the 25 cents they don't say anything about SF or NSF, only about small and large date

For the quarter, NSF are large date, and SF are small date.

Probably the information at coinsandcanada.com is incomplete.... obviously the OP 25 cents coin has a SF
