I found this at work a few weeks ago and was wondering if it is prooflike. The obverse sure looks it to me. I also enclosed pics of the reverse. Pardon the ignorance, this is not my specialty and there’s always room for learning.
Not proof like.........at least ways by the photogs. I read somewhere that in order for a coin to be considered 'prooflike' it need to reflect back newsprint at a distance of three inches........I'm probably wrong about that, but someone will correct me.
Ah I see, lol. I've never thought of Proof Like as a meaningful designation. Not like it's a grade or anything. Too each his own.
I love prooflike coins, and I have spent many years specializing in them. I think your coin has strong prooflike tendencies, but I don't think the mirrors are quite deep enough to be designated PL. The reverse appears to be weaker than the obverse. This is a strong "semi-prooflike" coin.
I agree with @physics-fan3.14 on this one. It appears to be a nice semi-PL, but not quite a PL. Your best bet is to hold it up to a tape measure and see how far out you can read the numbers. Denver was really polishing those dies at this time period, so finding a late '60's and early '70's PL coins are not unheard of. I have a '69-D that is as reflective in the fields as an actual '69-S Proof. I honestly thought it was a proof at first, until I saw the D instead of the S.
Some of us do enjoy proof like coins...it's not for everyone, but take a look at some of the prices and you'll see there are dedicated collectors (in particular, try finding something as seemingly common as a PL Silver Eagle!).
You mean like this? (graded NGC 65PL) The 1968D is really tough, with only 6 graded, and the 1969D is hard, with only 18 graded. The 1970D is what you'll see most often (there are about 10 of them on Ebay right now), with 141 graded. I haven't seen a fully PL 71D, but there are 3 of them designated. What I really, really want is a fully PL designated 1964 or 1964D. Those are nearly impossible to find.
Yes I have and it is as you say a "designation". I view it as meaningless as giving it a "ooh shiny" "designation". It isn't a grade. Others think otherwise which is fine by me.
