The only requirement a coin has to meet for me is to catch my eye, interest and intrigue me with its story, or simply be aesthetically pleasing (as in this case). A coin doesnt have to have a whole lot of value to be desirable. I got this common coin (in great condition) in a bargain bin at a coin shop. Not worth a lot, about what I paid for it...but it was encapsulated and brilliant. I like coins from Ireland anyway, the common theme in subject and style....simplistic subject a bit elegant...a bit humble and rustic. Love the bargain bin Oh...here is one other bargain bin buy: Bought it because of the oddly styled fish
Those are very attractive coins. I like coins that are simple and not cluttered. Take the Flying Eagle cent - very simple and very beautiful. I also like coins with animals, especially cows. I was born and raised on a dairy and I like to collect coins with cows.
you must like irish coins then, they have a wide array of animal coins. Just in case you havent seen them: http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/Ireland_all.html I agree with you about the simple and uncluttered...I like the intricate designs but to be honest but I tend to like the simple designs better: This is one of my favs and its real simple: BTW, talk about cheap, this was sent to me for free by a very nice guy simply because he knew I liked it Who says there arent good people out there.
This isn't the most simple of obverse designs, but it conveys a rather tranquil, pastoral theme you don't see very often on a coin. Also cheap. Federal Republic of Germany 50 pfennig Cu-Ni Karlsruhe mint
Cool coins. I usually go the opposite direction. I dont like a coin to be 'busy' but i do like the design to be intricate. Dont get me wrong, i have some of the coins listed above, and could have them all, so i do collect them. I just prefer more of the coin to be used for the design. Maybe it is tougher then i first thought to convey this I also do like that fishy however AND them baby chics!
Nice coins! I like the Portuguese 4 centavos (beautiful details!). The 10 pfennig from Danzig is in pretty good shape too. These coins are quite popular and I've seen some sold for up to $35.00 on eBay! Regards, Monetarium
Drusus, I own very few World coins but just so happens that I have about 80 BU Hen Pennies! Originally bought 100 because they were cheap and I liked them. Have sold a few, given some away but they are wonderful coins but can't say I ever looked at the simplicity of design. Jusr liked them. clembo
in the end whether its simple or not (I do like all types) thats why I buy any coins...I just like it.
You know Drusus you're really making me think so cut it out! I am primarily a U.S. odd denomination guy in the long run. Love the 2 Cent and both 3 Cent Nickel and Silver. Not exactly barn burners for design now are they? At the other end of the spectrum there are the Mexican coppers. Have always loved the big old 20 Centavos. Such lovely coins!
I have to agree. If I like it I want to buy it. The local coin show is coming in a few weeks and I'll be there searching every bargain bin I can find. Some of the stuff is truly wonderful.
Try to find yourself a US-Philippines 10 centavo from the 40's. I've seen them go for less than a dollar, and, at a stretch, it may fit your US odd denomination set. :smile
I am going to put my 50 PFENNING 1949 Oh, I have some large Mexican Twenty Centavos. What year do you need? I got a 2 pounds bag for 3 dollars, alot a large coins. Let me know. Cheryl
A great job illustrating what for me is one of the key attractions of coin collecting: collect what you like. The ability to start in this hobby inexpensively is important, and may become moreso in the times ahead.
I know what you mean, I like the coins from Ireland, UK, But I noticed I have alot of coins from Canada and Mexico. The plain and simple coins are best. Cheryl
got this one in the BB my middle daughter loves fish so I'm the best dad in the world for getting it for her, at 8 coins for $1 im going to be the best for ever.
