Hi coin and currency community. I have two different serial number ink issues and would appreciate any feedback on these bill searching finds. The #7 excessive ink example is one of approximatey 5 bills which I found each number was in the same 3rd number from the left position. Is this position quite common? Thanks for your thoughts. glc
A couple of additional comments on your notes: The smudging seen on your first note is fairly common on notes whose serial numbers end in 001. I think it's a result of the note being in direct contact with the shrink wrap around the 1000-note bundle. The somewhat overinked third digit on your second note has been *very* common on currency overprinted using the BEP's new LEPE lines (so far, that's all 2013 and 2017 $1's, some 2009 $1's, and some 2013 $2's). I have no idea what causes it to happen so often, or why it's always the third digit. Some quirk in the design of the new numbering cylinders, presumably.
I just didn't find the serial number smudge to be of extra value. Ink smears are usually dramatic. This type of error is often faked so you have to sure/ confident/ careful.
