AnemicOak, hopefully you'll recognize this coin. I'm thinking it may be from Pantikapaion. I've had it sitting in my unattributed pile since august! Its a tiny little AE4, I don't have measurements on it at the moment. The obverse shows a male facing right (pan?) and the reverse shows half a horse prancing right, with a vertical I above and a horizontal I right.
Nothing in MacDonald. I thin I might have it for you though. SATRAPS OF IONIA SPITHRIDATES look to be the answer... http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/tomcederlind/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=667&large=0 http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=192966&AucID=250&Lot=7542
Best news I've gotten all day. Thanks! It only cost me $3 out of a pick through bin! EDIT: How did you know where to look?
I searched VCoins for forepart horse, saw the listing there & used that info to search coin archives for SPITHRIDATES. It's a fairly rare coin from what I could find.
Ah, I was certainly searching under the wrong wildwinds database. (There's a similar specimen there too.) Thank you, again!
sometimes www.coinarchives.com will have what you are looking for if you can find the right search criteria. It is both world and ancient. It has helped me ID many a medal and off the beaten path coin I had no clue about.
