https://www.ebay.com/itm/1833-Cappe...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 Doesn't even look like a proof anymore. PCGS says only 5 minted, the seller says 10.
I don't know what PCGS is smoking on this one. That's not a proof. It is not the right die variety for the proofs. If you want to read more, the Heritage description gives provenance for the three known examples. There may be one or two more, and the census records are higher due to resubmissions. You can read more here: https://coins.ha.com/itm/bust-dimes...4-1605.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 I suspect that the coin linked on ebay is due to a "mechanical" error - the slab is wrong, and anyone who buys that is going to get hosed.
Maybe. But the date position looks different than I recall seeing on any other 1833. So more research is required on my part, but I'm not writing it off yet.
Ah so another possible "mechanical error" by PCGS. The number was the first thing i checked. Coin facts doesnt show one graded that low, but then again they dont show problem coins in their pop reports. One would think, that with the rarity of such a coin, there would be news about finding one, even a cleaned one maybe?
This is a JR-9 die marriage. The 1833 dime proofs were all the JR-2. This is either a mistaken attribution or a fake PCGS label.
I agree with the JR-9 attribution. Out of curiosity I checked my copy of the 1984 Early United States Dimes book and at the time the book was published, no proofs were known. It states that Walter Breen claimed to have seen a proof of an unknown die marriage between two known dies and that the authors were dubious of its existence. The OP coin is neither JR-2 or the unsubstantiated Breen coin, and it certainly doesn’t look like a proof. I bet it gets chalked up as a “mechanical error.”
It says Mintage 10. 1 of 5 known and then the survival says 5-8. If this was really 1 of 5 known, why would they be selling it for $7500? Even harshly cleaned it would be worth much more than that. They must know it's not real. An honest seller would not try to take advantage of this mistake. Anyone ever bother with "contact seller" or is that just an exercise in futility?
This just reminds me of a Coin that I have access to... that IS a Proof, but doesn't look like one. This one in particular is due to fire damage. Sorry about the pics, I had someone send me them. 1895 Proof Morgan Dollar - AU Details (located at Dallas Rare Coins)
LOL! Now that is funny... Actually, though, this coin has been worked on a LOT, from what I hear. I think the owner salvaged it and cleaned it (as properly as you can clean clean a coin.) I wasn't there when it was sent in, though. Its still an interesting valuable coin - mintage of 880. - but doesn't look like a proof to me when you look at it in person.
I am really really bad at grading Morgans so I wouldn't even venture a guess. Looks pretty rough though and maybe someday someone will be bold enough to try it. 10 20 or 30k gamble? Who knows?
