Was browsing e-bay and ran across this rating for a dealer I have bought from where the buyer claims this is a "fake" mint mark. Does this seem fake to you?

Not sure if it's fake or real but I would question the lack of wear on the coin, especially the wings as compared to the seemingly worn blob of a "S" mintmark. Also, no wear on the ribbon directly above the mintmark.

Not sure. Obviously not 'slab bound'. These eyes lack the determination of authentication........heck, if I was worried about it I would have bought it 'bound', but you can't always trust such things this day, eh what? Lacking knowledge, I remain neutral........

It definitely looks filled but without knowing the year it makes it hard to find the possible variety, and MM position.

Nope. The mint mark is real. 100%. The rest of the coin is fake, though. I'm pretty sure.

Placement is correct. I agree with die chip on the mm.
What's the year? If it is a super rare coin, that would raise suspicion on the authenticity of the mm.

For each knowledgeable eBay buyer, how many morons do you suppose there are? Honest question.

I purchased a 1909 S Indian Head Penny on eBay a few years ago and when I rinsed it in Acetone before placing it in my Dansco folder the "S" fell off. It had been shaved from another penny and glued onto a 1909 P. The seller refunded my money and said he had purchased it thinking it was a 1909 S. Since, I've been very cautious about coins where the mint mark changes the price significantly.

The coin looks good, mint mark looks good.

Someone used to sell mintmarks (or the molds - I forget which) in the back of magazines.

Instead of simply being cautious, it's better to know how to properly identify the real thing, and if one cannot do so, its best to either pay someone who can or to take a safer path than buying raw.

Are you suggesting a serious underestimation on Mr. Carroll's part? ;)

I meant 5 morons for every knowledge person, but that number is probably too low.

I know what you meant and was only kidding around. No harm, but I do agree. :)

Overall the moron to non moron ratio is about 90%- 10%.

Is there a weight on this coin? Is there a photo of the obverse?
