Long story short. I recently posted my "short set" of Mercs. I've had them for years. Ran my 16X loupe over them and this coin is darn nice. Color is white as are all of them by the way. Just a nice, clean coin and I'm looking for some grade opinions. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0001-6.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0002-5.jpg Thanks, clembo
MS-65+ Beautiful luster. I can't go FSB, without knowing for sure what is going on with that middle band.
Very Nice I'm a Huge fan of this type. What strikes me is the clean edges lack of contact marks on your coin. I don't see a full cross band because of the middle band, but it is exquisite just the same IMHO. I would give this coin a MS-67 and that is very liberal because I'm still learning. I don't see a problem with this coin. Is there one? What Is It? Nice post, love the Merc. Allen
So far you've all made good points. Don't know that it would merit FSB because the middle band is questionable. Honestly, I wouldn't give it FSB. I would give it at least MS66 or higher in a heartbeat though. As Allen said the fields are SO clean and guess what - they really are. I've had this coin for years without really looking but when I did tonight it was WOW. Don't see too many dimes that are this clean.
Don't get me wrong, this is a beautiful coin. The only problem i see is a tad bit of a weak strike, and a small nick at 5 ish o' clock on the obverse. Still a nice coin Clem.
Full easy 6 for my money, not quite FSB but dang close. Super nice !! I don't see the series too much, but easily nicer than any of mine
this is a really nice coin - sadly, it's not full bands and thus can only go as high as MS65. if it had full bands, it might be an MS66. -Steve
Wow, that is a nice looking Merc! :thumb: Easy 66 IMO. Not sure if it is FSB or not, doesn't look it from the pics, but I could be wrong. Either way, that is one good looking Merc. :thumb: Phoenix
Got me confused on that reasoning Steve. Far as I know FSB is like a footnote (and I don't think this is FSB by the way). In the meantime here's the PCGS Price Guide that I don't use but you'll notice it breaks down Mercs in both MS and MS FB in grades OVER MS65. http://www.pcgs.com/prices/frame.chtml?type=date&filename=mercury_dimes clembo
Going to have to disagree with you wholeheartedly on that one Steve. A nice coin is a nice coin period. A coin struck at a later die state but with immaculate surfaces (not that this is immaculate just an example) should merit a much higher grade. By your reasoning and assuming you apply this to all series' a Jefferson Nickel from the 50s has little chance of ever going beyond MS65 for not having full steps, a Franklin half can't go higher for no FBL, Morgans can't go higher due to weak strikes that are known in many years. I may be going well beyond your intent here. For all I know it only applies to Mercury Dimes to you and rereading your post it seems that way. However, what about my other examples? Curious to your thoughts now and no disrespect intended. clembo Leadfoot, The luster is all there. clembo
Clem, I would say easy 66 as a pictures on the internet kind of grade. It's always easier when you see a coin in hand. You definately picked a winner when you chose this coin!
I would not consider FSB/FS/FBL to a prerequisite for any grade. I would, however, be inclined to give a bump in grade for a coin on the bubble of the next higher grade.
