    Hello everyone,

This is another toned BU Morgan dollar from eBay that I spotted this afternoon. What do you think of this coin? All I would like to know is what grade you think it is and if the toning is real or fake. Thanks for the help!!!

Double Die I know just enough to be dangerous

My somewhat educated deduction is that the obv. has possibilities of natural. When we flip it, those saw tooth lines and speckles in the toning between them make me change my mind. Could have been taped to a display leaving those marks on the reverse and rarely exposed to the elements? Is that how these are secured in a Dansco or the like?

With all due respect I hope you didn't pay much for it.

Not all toning, even when naturally occurring, is a good thing and/or premium worthy. If you haven't yet done so, the below link should be both very enlightening and helpful if interested particularly in toned Morgans.

I haven't bought it yet, but I'm considering maybe placing a bid for it. I always ask CoinTalk when I spot a toned coin if it is natural or not because you guys have far more experience than me. I was at a coin show recently and bought a toned coin for $50 and I listed it on eBay about a month ago for $70 and it hasn't sold yet, and it i probably worth barely $50... so yeah I don't have much experience at all.

it looks natural, probably had tape across the reverse covering the untoned section. i can't tell about the spots on the laurel wreath, maybe some residue or something stuck on the coin. the obverse has a lot of bag marks, if it's MS it's not higher than MS62 imo, and it may be AU, hard to tell from the photo. it's a gamble bidding based on those pics, if it were me i might bid $35 maybe, but i wouldn't feel that bad if i lost the auction.

+1. The photos don't show the luster very well, and it could well be an AU coin. Also the toning is pretty and acceptable IMHO, but won't command much of a premium to most buyers of Morgan's.

The premium doesn't add or subtract from the value. The dark lines on the reverse in the middle of the toning on the top and bottom is deep, and would be considered environmentally damaged because it is dark and deep enough to be considered staining. It would slab, but as mentioned, MS62, maybe 63, is the highest it will go. Lots of ticks on the face and in front of the bust.

A wise approach in asking for advice, sir; kudos!

Now please don't take this wrong, but I'm going to be straight with you and hope for the best: the coin is a dog in pretty much every way possible. It's noisy as all hell, is likely to look even worse in-hand, and there's nothing about the toning even remotely premium-worthy as-is. The reverse kills it and the coin would need to be dipped if there's any chance of saving it (look closely and you'll see cancer is already growing). Grade-wise I respectfully think the others are being overly optimistic, especially since there simply isn't sufficient information to make a solid call as to particularly the surface conditions on the reverse. I wouldn't have sold this as a generic "BU" as-is, and possibly not even as a gen unc. If looking for something to potentially profit on, either now or down the road, this isn't a good candidate unless it could be had for near scrap (and even then).

That said, I haven't checked to see if there's any possibility of it being a desirable VAM, but at this point I doubt it really matters.

Please do take the time to dig through the "research coins" section of the link I posted earlier, especially if toners truly appeal to you. There's a lot of truly excellent info there and is well worth the time and effort.
