Here at CoinTalk and at most of the other forums which discuss collectables and the like, threads develop which are highly subjective and open for various interpretations. My question is when a new thread is posted do you wait for a few answers before responding or do you post your thoughts right away?

Naturally, in many instances the first poster has his or her response torn to shreds by those who not only answer the question or provide input to the OP but also point out the flaws of the First Responder's answer. Some individuals relish the opportunity to not only answer the question and provide exceptional insight but they'll also interject a little humorous sarcasm. But, remember the saying , Stick and Stones...

Again, knowing how threads develop in cyber environments do you normally wait for a few answers or are you confidant enough to be that individual who responds first???

If I can provide an answer or opinion, I don't hesitate to post.

Interesting thought, if I have an idea or an opinion I will respond.
    Sometimes before reading other opinion.
(which can look stupid at times, but then it was an honest post.)
Then, after reading other ideas I may change my mind, or just plain argue a point.

I dont make it a point to scan the forum for unanswered threads just to make sure I'm the first to respond. I dont mind if I'm the first to answer a question or make the first comment and I like to form my own opinion if there's already answers ahead of mine. On the other hand, if I cant answer a question I just usually leave the thread well enough alone. Interesting thread Ben.

    Bone,

I agree that you have hit on a great topic and one that really needed to come to light!

Due to work, family and other obligations, I very seldom have the luxury of being the first responder! However, if I happen to log on to Coin Talk and there is a posting that I can answer or give help on, then I usually do so but if I can't answer or don't have a clue, I am more apt to stay out of the fray. When I come across a fairly new posting, I will usually read the post, look at any pictures included and formulate my opinion and answer before reading anyone else's response. If I find that someone has already answered the post with pretty much what I was thinking, then I will more than likely stay out of it with the exception of giving kudos on a great find or purchase, etc.. However, if I have a different opinion, then I will give my opinion and try not to belittle someone else's post! I am not saying that I have never done so but I try to be conscious of other folk's feelings and how they may take what I have to say.

I seldom have first crack at providing a response, but I certainly would not hesitate to do so if I felt I had something to offer to the OP. There is only a small percentage of threads that I feel that I could make a worthwhile contribution, and I am not afraid to rock the boat if that is what my honest opinion would do. I am very much in agreement with huntsman for this topic. Usually I do read all of the responses before I make a reply, mostly to avoid repeating something already presented.

Sometimes, I like to see others opinions especially on a grade if I am waffling, other times I give my opinion if I can regardless of if I am first or twelfth

Generally, if I can help or offer an opinion, and it is a new thread, then I have no prob with being the first responder. I usually will state a bit of a disclaimer. saying that it is only my opinion, and I could be totally wrong. Then, I'll leave it, and if I'm wrong I'll wait for someone to tear me to shreds. :D Lol, just joking. That hasn't happened to me yet, that I know of. But then, I could be wrong. :D Interesting thread Bone, and I agree, something that should have some light shed on. :thumb:

I figure I can dish it out so I can take it although, like most humans, I can get defensive.

It really doesn't matter to me though. If the thread is interesting enough and I feel strongly enough about it I'll post first.

    Bone...what an intriguing thread:p

You know, for me personally, I do not mind being a first responder if I have an interest in the thread.
We are human and at the same time individual, not two of are alike unles we are zygotic twins..LOL

There have been several times that I have been corrected and rightfully so, I do not know everything, yet I am not afraid to stick my neck out sometimes. At least I am learning. If not from my own knowledge, then someone who has that knowledge and then portrays it openly without judgement.

There are so many variables in our Hobby that we are bound to have differences in judgements between us all. I for one, when I find out that I have made a mistake, will be the first to own up to it and issue an apology if needed. I always expect others to feel and do the same, however, this is not always the case.
I recently falsely accused of misinformation because I thought I had a clear understanding. Once corrected, I contacted a well respected source and verified the information, then issued an apology. None of us are right all the time, but hey.it sure is fun trying to gather all that info.

    Semper FI Brother...Great Thread!!

As long as I think I can add something to the discussion or answer a question, I post a response whenever I get to it. First last or in the middle.

I will say this though, when I first started participating on coin forums it always seemed like my comments just killed the discussion - dead, stopped it right in its tracks. Dang near gave me a complex :D

I've gottin that impression from most of my posts lately, too. It's almost like I'm a thread killer. A hot thread that I haven't seen, I post, *poof*, dead thread. I don't get it. Kinda creepy. Sometimes someone will post and I don't follow up even though I have something to say -- just to see if the post will Lazerus. And many times I don't post to a thread simply because I'm afraid of killing it and I want more info on the topic of the thread. It's really creepy to kill a thread like that.

    Doug and adelv,

I think we all get this from time to time! I know that I sure have and yes it gives you a complex! You get that feeling that just because you posted a response, the Wicked Witch comes along, waves her' Magic Wand and turns you into a pile of crap:eek: and you wonder and wonder, what did I do wrong this time!:rolling:

I think it is true that in some forums, the way that some people answer in the threads makes some other wait a little before they take part. So I find this topic quite interesting to make us think about it.

But it is not my case. My problem is that my English is not perfect (I am Spanish), so I have to rewrite my answers. And the biggest thing to me is that I am mostly interested on euro coins, and general topics so I won't participate so much on those about errors, counterfeits, US coin variants, ancient coins, paper money, etc.

Nevertheless, I enjoy the forum a lot, although most I won't say anything (but I will write any time I have something to say).
