    So this penny is black in color... Assuming this is a patina issue... Its been locked away for a few years at least. Sorry about the double picture.

    The Copper Plating was exposed and the inner Zinc is rotting.

    Actually your pictures are quite good. Some more information, in 1982 the Lincoln Cent was changed from a 95% copper/5% zinc and tin to a copper plated zinc planchet. The copper is so thin that even a slight damage (either during minting or as post-minting-damage or PMD) causes the zinc to be exposed and since it is such a reactive metal, the decomposition that follows is called zinc rot. If you don't have "A Guide Book Of United States Coins" (the red book) by Yeoman, you should invest in a copy. Older used books are fine, since the prices are not current even for current years, but the information is tremendous.
