    Hello all,

I saw this coin on eBay and wanted you guys to "authenticate" it before I buy it. I didn't understand the description because I do not know much about VAM's for Morgan dollars and I did not see the errors in the pictures. If you can, please tell me the grade it is in, if the toning is real or fake, and if there are actual errors on the coin. Thanks for all responses! This is its description straight from its listing:

1885 uncirculated Morgan silver US variety dollar coin with rainbow toning on reverse! Clashing on obverse on lips and clashing on reverse between olive and wings and clashing on opposite side of wings as well as die crack on obverse on letter M and star!

Here are all the pictures in the listing:

I can't tell for sure but it appears to be a far date placement so compare to VAMs 23A and 33A, they are the closet to matching the neck clash line from the eagle's right wing to letter N.

Too me it looks as if the toning is real. My reasoning for this is that it is only done on the one side and only covers a small portion of the coin. Maybe stored in a holder that was possibly somewhere the light could shine on the coin. I had some coins in the factory packaging do this, even when they were out of the light . The coin reacts to the plastic holder, and seemed to only tone on one side that was facing up with nothing covering the coin . These are only a guess on my part. Looks like a very nice coin otherwise. I am not a toning fan. Nice to see others coins. Dillan

Although it may grade MS62/63, it appears to be slightly circulated or cleaned. Color/toning looks good. Nice coin. I am not so much into VAMs anymore since I discovered Bust Half dollars :)

Thanks for all of your help! I think I might buy it because I have all this extra knowledge and "authenticating".

Toning seems legit, but not cause for a premium, since it's just a little bit on the reverse. For the variety, check VAM 9C.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Yes, the toning appears natural and attractive. There shouldn't be a big premium for that toning since it is such a small area, but it is nice.
