Eduard, I am sure that everyone here on Coin Talk and especially myself, are more than delighted to help as we get to see your extremely beautiful and rare coins! If you eventually put the 1861 Proof Set together, you have to promise to share pictures with us! Frank
Eduard, There are some 1861 Proof Half Dimes, Dimes, Quarters, Halfs and even a Proof Dollar up for Auction on eBay right now in case you want to watch them and see what the coins fetch individually! These are graded by NGC and/or PCGS and being sold by Heritage. Instead of including all of the links to the Auctions, you can find these coins by the following search method: Log onto and Sign in to eBay (I am not sure but I assume that you will be redirected to eBay U.S. once you complete the next set of instructions). To the right of the "Category Block" at the top of the page, click on "Advanced Search". When the Advanced Search screen comes up, click on the "Items by Seller" link on the left side of the page. When the search block comes up, type in Heritageauctiongalleries then click on "Search". When the items being sold by Heritage completely loads, then type in 1861 in the left-hand Search block and change then Category to "Coins & Paper Money" then click on "Search". When the page with coins Dated 1861 being sold by Heritage completely loads, go to the left side of the page and click on "Coins: U.S." and when the next page loads you can scoll down the next two pages to find all of the coins I mentioned above. There is also an 1861 Proof Three Cent Silver being sold by Great Southern Coins at the following link: http://www.greatsoutherncoins.com/Items/gsc041006023 I have been unable to locate any 1861 Proof Indian Cent pieces being sold but I am sure that some will come up before long. Good luck! Frank
Mark, You are right! I got so caught up in loloking for the coins, that I wrote that in error without thinking. I have gone back and edited the 2c piece out. Thanks! Frank
Well, thank you Frank for pointing this out! i went in to the Heritage site (which i discovered just a few weeks ago thank to the courtesy of a member of this forum) and typed "1861 Proof" I am really tempted by one of the Proof dimes, of which there are 3. I don't know..... (I am going to have to decide between the nice Roman dupondius now in CNG, and this). One difficulty is shipment to Germany: german customs now impose a 19 % import duty (!!!) on collectibles coming in from outside of the EU. And there is no getting past them! Heritage charges me $ 25 to ship it here. This all adds up and nullifies a lot of the $/Euro rate advantage, unfortunately. But it sure looks tempting.....! I love the surfaces of that PCGS proof 63 dime. With regards, and many thanks for all your help, Eduard
Find a buddy in the US to have it shipped to, then have them ship it to you. I don't know if they x-ray everything, or not, but I'd try it with a modern circulated coin first.
Bad idea. First of all the import laws apply to all shipments from outside the EU. So it doesn't matter who ships it. Secondly, if you try to sneak it in and get caught - bye-bye coin and you get in trouble in the bargain.
Eduard, You can get around the shipping costs by attending the Fun Coin Show in Orlando, Florida this coming week and weekend and bid on the coin there! I am pretty sure that all of the coins will be on display and you can bid on them there but you might want to check with Heritage first. You may still have to pay the Import Duties when you fly back home but just think of all of the really beautiful and rare coins you will get to see and possibly purchase. To a Coin Collector, it's like a Candy Store to a child! Frank
I think it is probably an impaired proof. Notice in the edge view shots, the reeds on the 1861 extend all the way to the top an bottom rims ad are full all the way to the rim. On the 1862 you note that the reeds do not feach the rims and there is a beveled area between the rim and the reeds. The reeds also bevel down to those beveled areas. That edge is typical of a business strike.
