Some type of exotic metal perhaps? Ultra fine Dremel brushes? Horsehair? Spells, incantations? Mean thoughts? Alberto VO5? Ooh, ooh, Tang drink powder? Tide pods?

I think not. I think he's saying they DESCRIBE it. I want to know if they know what exactly it is. The oddest part is NGC doesn't SEEM to use the word. What do THEY call it? Inquiring minds want to know!

Too much credit. But I'll tell you this much - if I can get even some educated guesses out of PCGS people, I WILL be ruining a few low value coins testing the ideas out. Occasionally brave coins give the ultimate sacrifice in the search for knowledge.

Didn't I read that they once used a horsehair wheel to polish proof coining dies' fields?

Bingo ! That is precisely the idea. But it also applies to those coins which have a granular or grainy texture in the fields.

One of the diagnostics to identify smoothing is to look at the areas of the fields in protected areas like between the legends and devices and the denticles or rim, and compare them to the inner fields. If you look closely at the blow up pics of the IHC Kentucky posted you can examples of that. The surfaces in the protected are much rougher, more course than those of the open areas. With some coins another diagnostic is that there will be luster in the more protected areas of the fields and none in the more open areas of the fields.

As to methods, it can be done by hand when the problems being smoothed out are less severe and by powered tools when they are more severe. But getting into the smaller, more protected areas, that is and always has been problematic, basically meaning it's not done which is why the diagnostic is typically present.

Actually I thought clashed coins sold at a premium...albeit to a select audience, but at a premium.

I’m not among the select, so if I had a clashed die coin, I’d probably try to smoo... HEY! :troll:

I also posted this in the Ancients section and haven't received many replies. The reason I bought it was to put into a 7070 type presentation and I thought that it looked really nice if you aren't getting too picky. AFAIK, the term "smoothing" in ancient coin talk referred to using some technique to remove roughness from the fields (maybe a new BIC disposable razor?). There is another term "tooling" that refers to the reworking of devices in the fields to strengthen (or in some cases to add) them. Hey, it was $10 or so...

First you have to learn how to do it...I don't think you shave that often :)

Comprehensively? No. I do have enough used Harry’s cartridges to experiment with. I have sworn to be in this year’s SOB Numismatists picture.

They (ridiculously, no wait, they're right) consider me the most physically ABLED National Volunteer. Sad, that. There's a lot worse off than I am.

I work for Sam Joseph, the Exposition Manager.

Dis is hazzurdous dooty. Dis is Philly, Ignorant Union Work Rules Capital of the World. If seen plugging ina lamp wit'out bein' a union 'lectrician, I could show up missin', ya know? My only hope will be wearing my Nick Foles jersey under my blue ANA golf shirt. Then start a E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles! cheer and run like heck.
