Morgan lovers, post your single sided DMPL's

One sided DMPL Morgan's are beautiful, but don't seem to get the respect they deserve. There is nothing as beautiful as an incredibly deep mirror on a Morgan Dollar. Would it be great if both sides matched? Heck yeah, but we can sometimes get some great deals when just one side has those beautiful deep mirrors.

So if you have 'em and I'm sure most of you Morgan lovers do, post those single sided DMPL Morgan's. It would be fun if you could show both sides. Even if one side is DMPL and the other is PL, post away.

I'll start it off with an 1878-S. The obverse is PL but the reverse is DMPL all the way. I can read out to the 15 inch mark on my tape measure. It's currently raw.


Up next is an 1880-S with a nice flashy semi-PL obverse with some frost and a drop dead gorgeous reverse with mirrors that you could shave with. I can read out to the 14 inch mark on my tape measure. Again, this one is raw, but it came in a Capital Plastics holder with a blue insert.

Very nice examples Justin! I have to say the San Fran mint was notorious for playing musical dies back in the first several years of Morgan Dollar production. If you haven't read it yet, check out the thread on VW 2.0 regarding the recent 78-S VAM-58 that PCGS graded SP65. The die marriage trail from the first day or two of production will make your head spin...

Oh, and I do have a few examples. I'll have to dig them up this evening or weekend at the latest...

 

I've read the recent news release about it, but I have not read the VWII thread about it yet. I'll have to go check it out.

I had to pass on a really nice looking MS-65 1881-S this weekend at a local coin show. It had a very beautiful DMPL obverse. But I just didn't have the money for it. I'm saving for something right now that I can't wait to get in hand.

I picked this one up a while back. PCGS called it MS65+ and CAC gave it a green bean. The reverse is easy PL but the obverse isn't even close...

 

I love it!! Super nice 65+. Carry that with you when you go hiking and you will have a nice way to signal search planes.

 

Oh yeah, that 78'S is amazing.

 

Here's another San Fran mint one sider, an 1880-S VAM-84. I can read print on the reverse but the obverse is no cigar. NGC agreed giving it an MS64.

 

Single sided PLs can be beautiful, but they make me sad to think what might have been.

The advantage is, if you're going to display them then you can just show the strong side - and get the coin for much cheaper.

 

This is exactly my thoughts. I love that I can pick up a very beautiful coin that had both sides matched, would have cost me MUCH more.
