http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/commemoratives/index.cfm?action=BaldEagle Just saw these... you'd think the Mint would have done more to get the word out, but I didn't even hear about them until I saw someone mention them here... Anybody know what options they come in? Based on past experience, my guess would be clad unicrculated, clad proof, silver uncirculated, silver proof, clad & silver uncirculated, clad & silver proof, gold uncirculated, gold proof, clad/silver/gold uncirculated, clad/silver/gold proof, and of course a set that includes one of everything. Nice designs. I think the eaglets on the obverse of the half looks exceptionally cute. Gold's a bit out of my price range but I plan to get proofs of the dollar and half. Anyone else have thoughts on these? BTW they go on sale online on Jaunary 15, noon EST. Think they'll sell out fast? I'm not taking chances lol and plan to be online right when they go on sale.
I really like the proposed designs. Not sure if they will sell out real fast or at all. I just dont have a feel for how the public feels for the subject. I will pick up one of each, minus the gold most likely though. as for options, the more of these the mint has, the more they will be hurting the hobby. There are just so many options out as it is, to add an abundance more on this commem i dont think would be wise. It is begining to feel like what it must have been like back during the 80's olympics when the mint was flooding the market with coins.
The Bald Eagle Commemorative Coin Program consists of three coins – a $5 gold coin, a silver dollar, and a half-dollar clad coin – available in both proof and uncirculated conditions. Surcharges from the program are authorized to be paid to the American Eagle Foundation of Tennessee for the purposes of continuing its work to save and protect Bald Eagles nationally.
Makes sense, as nominally what these coins are supposed to be commemorating is the 35th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act. Also celebrating the removal of bald eagles fro the endangered list, and commemorating the bald eagle as a national emblem. Premiums from commemoratives tend to be earmarked for some program closely related to the subject (for example, the desegreagation commemorative surcharges went to restoration and preservation of Little Rock High School.)
In reality, there are basically six different coins in question here (a proof and unicrculated version of each of 3 different coins). They tend to get a little confusing with how many different permutations you can possibly get these six in. I'm hoping personally one of them is the proofs of the silver dollar and clad half, or else I'll just get those two individually.I have no idea who dreams up the packaging combinations and how they mathematically figure out how to distribute the coins lol... I do know what the mintage limits are: gold $5: 100,000 silver $1: 500,000 clad 50c: 750,000 That includes both unicircualted and proof, divided up amongst however many packaging combos they can dream up. I'm sure they'll have to reserve a few for the prestige proof sets too. No idea how fast these will go. The thing that makes this things go fast is how much collectors and non-collectors feel the "I must have that" urge. Whether this will be like the Marine Corps dollar, or the Desegregation Dollar, or something in between, I have no idea... anyone hear alot of antincipatory buzz about these? That's the real test... Anyway I'm not taking my chances... got the day off anyway lol... want to be first in line this time. Still peeved I missed out on the Marine Corps dollar (did eventually get one 2 years later lol, but that's not the same thing as getting it right when it comes out) and more recently, World Series tickets in Denver... the internet owes me lol...
I am with you Troodon. I dont have the day off from work, but being a Government worker, i do get some leeway as to just what i do when i sit at my desk basicaly, what they dont know, doesnt hurt me we should see some sort of pre-sale or at least a page showing it will be available apearing on the mints site soon.
The mint is slow with keeping the upcoming products page up to date. The schedule page is more helpful but dates do change sometimes. http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProdschedView?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001
Well if you want a slightly educated guess lol would say aproximately $500 for the gold, $40 for the silver, $20 for the clad half, give or take a little. The actual prices probably won't be known until they actually have them up for sale. (Which will be Tuesday, January 15, noon EST.)
Wow! Those are some very high mintages in my opinion. But they are very nice looking coins, and will probably be very well received by collectors.
price for commem gold for $5.00 gold coin. most likely it will be $319.95 for unc and $339.95 for proof
I was going to post a question about how fast anyone thought they would go myself. I would hate to see a repeat of the 2001 buffalo when they sold out quickly (and I missed out). I really like these designs and hope they will still be available later that day when I get off work.
I cant wait till i get off work at 5pm ... i will have 3 pcs in my office all trying to get an order through. I always do that, so its not unusual for me, but i would hate to miss out as well!!!
The law states the gold coin will weigh 8.359 grams. Now if this is in Troy ounces, which weighs 31.1034768 grams, the gold coin for this comem would be appx 1/4 ounce. The American Gold Eagle 1/4 ounce was selling for 239.95. So I think $319/$339 might be a litle high. Alot of the price will come down to what the spot price of gold will be. When the feds drop interest rates late this month, i would think gold would increase - but thats pure speculation Either way, with the volitile price of gold in todays market - anything can happen!!! Edit: What i am surprised about however, is that the american Eagle 1/4 ounce has a face value of $10. This commem has a face value of $5. is it normal for equal amounts of gold content carrying different denominations?
