I have a nice 71 Brown I want to crack out. No Blue Haze! Now I don't want to mess the thing up getting it out like I did last time with a 73 Brown. I used latex gloves on that and it still got fingerprints!

The first thing to look at is the edge of the Ike. If it doesn't show any copper, it's 40% silver. From there you can check for errors and anything else that might interest you.

One of my friends at my coin club got a 1972 Type 2 in AU 58. What’s a fair price?

Really depends on the coin. But PCGS currently lists this at 65 in EF 40 and 100 in MS63, with 45 to 58 ranging from 67$ to 75$. I don't know what recent ones in 58 have gone for on various markets, but just using this as a guess, perhaps between 60 and 90 $ depending on how the coin actually looks (retail).

So a buddy of mine who is a dealer too came upon a 72 type II. He notified me and asked if I was interested and he would give me below grey sheet for an AU 58. This would be my first 72 type II so I am excited. I am not sure how much to pay for a raw AU58 though. I'm seeing between $60-$90 range. He got this from a client that had a hundred or so Ikes so this would come from the Wild. Any advice on pricing would be great from you all. Anyways, all this gets me back into my collection which I have ignored for quite a few months. I broke mine out and realized I have a lot of work to do. Currently I have 31 coins out of 35 (my own definition of a set). I am needing the 72 type2, 74S , 76S type 1, and a 78. So with this 72 type 2 I can get the rest pretty easy. My quest for my first set is almost done. I am unsatisfied though. First off, my presentation and way of keeping the collection together is bothering me. I have a binder that has plastic pages that carries 20 coins. I put all the coins in flips then into the binder. I was going to crack out all Browns and Blues and 76 sets and put them in the binder. I have done that to some but now I don't like that approach. Someone give me some advice on how to make a nice presentation of Ikes.

I picked up this proof collection at a coin club auction last month. Not sure why only the first two coins were silver, unless they just cherry picked the good ones out and back filled it with clad ones. I got it for a good price anyhow and I like the ike medal which I somehow had never seen before.

@Bman33 i think that somewhere at the low end of that range would be good.

They can be had in XF for under $45, so for a nice AU I’d only pay a little bit more. UNC is where I’d pay a stronger premium.

The first two Ike proofs were ONLY available in silver as they weren’t included in the annual proof sets until 1973, therefore no clad Ike proofs in 1971-72.

    I hope that helps

@Bman33 - I think $60 would be the top of the mark for a true AU58. Ike "values" are currently trending down for both raw and graded examples. But this means there is ample opportunity for some good buys at the moment. If I had started my PCGS registry set this year I would have saved a LOT of money.

Bman! Nice to hear from you. I picked up 8 Ikes (1-'71, 4-'72's, 2-'76's) from a bank teller last week and I thought of you and your Ike collection. I'm having fun IDing the varieties, checking for clash marks, etc. I found this site http://www.ikegroup.info though an internet search and I'm enjoying reading up on the series. Anyway back to your question about price. First off, be careful with the grade being presented to you (AU58). I'm pretty sure your grading is like mine - entry level. Look at the coin carefully and object-fully. I would try to buy this coin for no more then an AU55 or better yet AU53, not because you are trying to haggle but because the coin may be over graded. Also, remember this coin is raw. You cannot compare a raw coin to a TPG price list. So price this coin accordingly (lower).

    Cheers and happy collecting!

The Ikegroup said not to pay more than $40. I don't know where else to find these.

You'll find them with patience. Can you attend some local coin shows? Ike's are not the most popular series. This bodes well for those who want to collect. A good selection of quality coins with few buyers make this series a buyers market.

The Ike group is correct about the $40.

There is a local coin show circuit that I go to. Haven't found many except Brown Ikes. For some reason everyone has those.

The problem with these coins is that they account for a significant percentage of the mintage. Most will never turn up because they were spread far and wide but the absolute number of survivors is still significant.

And you are probably seeing the same dealers with the same coins. It can get long in the tooth. Are you comfortable with buying over the internet? Great collections, Stacks and Heritage are reputable. Can you get out to lager shows? I've been making the trek from NYC to Baltimore and we are going to Philadelphia next week.

There is one larger show coming up in October. I am not in the greatest of hurries so I will be patient with the hunt. I have bought some online but prefer face to face so I can get a true view of the coin.

So it turns out my friend didn't have the 72 Type II. He notified me that he made a mistake. Anyone here cough up the dough for a 72 type II in a MS-65 or higher?
