Question for the experts in ancient coins... Is this roman coin from the time of the emperor Antoninus Pious? An as? It's size is about the same of a US 1/2 dollar and I assume the material is copper. Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Yup, that does look like Antoninus Pius, and it certainly is some sort of AE. Would you be able to get a measurement in mm?
Yes, it's Antoninus pious. looks to be a dupondis based upon the size you mentioned. Here is a coin which is similar. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/bigp...IC_1042.jpg&ruler=./ric/antoninus_pius/i.html Take Care Ben
On dupondii, the portraits usually bear radiate crowns. It is an as, most likely RIC 700a. (Rome, 140-144 AD) I must say, however, that is an interesting reverse die - the rudder is held upright and the cornucopiae points outward. http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=83938&AucID=90&Lot=1520 http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/antoninus_pius/RIC_0700a.jpg
I lied! Its not an as. Given the 30mm diameter, it has to be a sestertius. And whaddya know, here's a match. Lol. Rome, 151-152 AD. RIC 885 http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=58276&AucID=61&Lot=1089 EDIT: Of course, this makes the $20 price tag twice as good!
