I now have a certified unstruck planchet for a Large Cent, a Half Cent, and as of last night from winning a GC auction, a copper-nickel small cent.

So, for cents/half cents, my collection of unstruck blanks/planchets now includes:

    1. Unstruck 1/2 cent planchet
    2. Unstruck large cent planchet
    3. Unstruck small cent planchet (copper nickel)
    4. Unstruck bronze cent blank
    5. Unstruck bronze cent planchet
    6. Unstruck steel cent blank
    7. Unstruck steel cent planchet
    8. Unstruck copper-plated zinc cent planchet
    9. Unstruck, unplated zinc cent blank
    10. Unstruck, unplated zinc cent planchet

I do not have an unstruck copper-plated zinc blank as I have never seen one. I asked Jardens, the company who makes/plates zinc cents if I could get one from them, and they said they won't provide me with one either free or for sale.

You wouldn't believe. Took 3 years. Not even gonna try and find blanks of early cents. Next big one is an unstruck war nickel.

Cool set. At one time, I had an unstruck 1793-95 half cent planchet. I've never seen another.

I don't imagine I will ever see one of those!

That is an awesome collection. I am intrigued by PCGS's ability to make the AU50 determination, given that it wasn't circulated at all. Am I missing something?

Here are just a few other interesting unstruck certified examples I have other than cents:

Proofs (2 nickels, clad quarter, clad Ike):

They should. I got all my 4 proofs from you, plus the type 2 large cent planchet and the 90% silver $1 blank

So why are the Type I's in copper available, but not in copper plated zinc?

Even stranger is that there are type 2 unplated copper zinc blanks out there, which I have one. Why are there no blanks with copper plating? I have no idea.

When do they put the copper plating on during the process?

So that explains why there aren't any no rim, copper plated, zinc blanks.

So @JCro57 , 2 of the slabs (all of which are fabulous, by the way) are PCGS, & are the only ones actually graded (AU50 & PR62) even though they are not struck.

How do you think it's possible that PCGS can make that determination? The others apparently do not. Am I missing something?

I am unsure as to what the process is, or how/why a determination can be made for PCGS to determine a grade on an unstruck specimen. And what is used to make a determination between MS62 and MS61 or MS63? Contact marks? Edge wear? Color?

I honestly don't have anany concrete answers.
