Recently @lordmarcovan posted 2 mystery coins for sale and if he describes something as “pretty sweet”, it’s a good bet that I would like it. So I bought it and it is pretty cool. Since I collect most anything I wasn’t worried about it fitting in. So here it is From what little I’ve been able to discover, it’s a jeton from around the 1890s. It’s not in the Krause US Token book, as you would expect, but it’s not in the Latin American Token book either. Being the generous soul he is, LordM added in a token attributed to the Panama Canal Zone from the 1970s. Maybe @Jwt708 can correct me if I’m wrong. And if that wasn’t enough, he also sent some amazing and complete fossilized shark teeth, Mako and Tiger shark. I’ve found plenty of small teeth up here near the Chesapeake/Potomac but these 2 are huge. And the presentation is so much better than my box o teeth So many thanks Rob and now I want to know what Mystery Coin 1 was. Please join in with anything you want. Jim
Great Pick ups! Very generous of @lordmarcovan to add the extras too!! Love that Argentinian 10D. But the sharks teeth takes the cake imo. You just don't find those here in Montana. We got big dinosaurs in the ground, but they are in eastern Montana.
I’d love to find dinosaur fossils. I’ve seen Dino footprints in a quarry here in Virginia but I don’t think we have good soil for finding bones. That would be really cool.
I've never found any Dino bones myself, but about 20 years ago I tripped over what I thought was a rock, just outside Canon City, Colorado. It turned out to be a fossilized tree. I got to help the local museum archeologists dig it out. That was quite tedious but fun.
They found a complete whale skeleton when they were dredging the pond behind my grandmother's house. It was amazing as a kid to go watch them digging it up!
Fort Davis, Atlantic Area Installation Command (AAIC) Obv.: AAIC / NCO OPEN / MESS Rev.: 5c / IN TRADE (framed across) Cunningham Vol 2, pg. 12, CZ130a; 22mm, aluminum Meyer and Went Company struck 2,000 in May 1970 and another 2,000 in September 1970. A cool capture!
That's a fantastic megalodon! Small for the species, but well proportioned and superb quality. Bet that was an exciting find.
I just assumed it was a great white, not a megalodon. I was probably 9 or 10 at my Aunt’s house in Colonial Beach. I swiped my hand through the pile of rocks and shells once and there it was. It was such an easy find that I accused my aunt of planting it. Almost 40 years later and I still remember it so yes, I was pretty thrilled to find it.
http://www.moviarg.com/notas/token_1890.html The original is in Spanish, but you can translate it with Google.
I can't speak for @H8_modern, but there might be more where that came from- there were a lot of tokens in the lot I got that from. Probably not any more like that particular one, but I'll have a look in my box and PM you if anything looks like it might be of interest.
Offers to buy/sell/trade have to be in the specific forum or through private message. I collect military trade tokens, heck, I probably have over 600 tokens. I focus on Air Force tokens but have some from all branches. Would love to see what you collect!
Very true. As it happens, I didn't see any other military tokens in my box of stuff. I've got one I dug in 2005 while metal detecting at an old house in SC. It still baffles me. From the style of it, I suspect that it's 1880s/1890s or so- roughly Spanish-American War era. It is an octagonal 5c good-for that says "Co. M / 6th Infy." on it. Unfortunately my old pictures of it are dead- I'll have to reshoot it sometime.
