I am considering buying some bulk wheat pennies. Somewhere in the 1000 to 5000 range depending on price. With so many options otut there I feel overwhelmed with choices. So I'm looking on some advice. I'm hoping to find a lot with a good mix from the teens through the 50's. Wouldn't mind if there was a few Indian heads mixed in. Can somebody that has some experience in this field please let me know your experiences. What are good places to buy from? How much should I expect to pay? I'm also considering talking with our local coin shops here but I'd like to find some deals online just to have a base as to what to expect so I can know if they're offering a good deal or not.
I'd say eBay would be a good place to look for what you want. I used to buy those "unsearched" roll lots on there (from around $5-$8 or so each at the time) and the rolls would often have everything from a few Indians to the teens and above. Now, others on here will denounce such purchases but when you buy them just for fun without necessarily expecting to hit the lottery, it's a good way to have fun filling in gaps or upgrade while not knowing exactly what you're going to find at the same time.
You can buy a box of wheat cents on eBay for around $200. Here is a search for them: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=wheat+pennies+box&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_sop=15. Also, there is an auction someone has up ending soon that has not gone up too high: https://www.ebay.com/itm/25-Box-50-...at+pennies+box&_from=R40&rt=nc&LH_TitleDesc=0. A box is 2500 coins.
If my arithmetic is correct that makes the cost per coin about .08 cents each. Are they selling that strong now?
Wow, thanks for that. I got in just in time to snipe them. That's about as good of a deal as I've seen when I was searching sold listings there.
From the listings I've seen sold yes a lot of them are doing at about that price. I've seen some go as low as about 4 cents each but it seems that most of the ones that sell for that price say they are all 50s or 40s and 50s. I don't expect that the bulk of them would be any older than that but I'm hoping for a good mixture. If I get maybe about 20% 20's and 30's and around 5% teens I'll be very happy . We will see.
Wow..... This big jar was full to the brim of unsearched wheats. Had to move it with a hand truck it was so heavy. We weighed it and did the arithmetic. Sold them about .025 each just a few months back. Should have auctioned them!
Coins at that price will surely be heavily filtered and contain almost entirely 40's and 50's cents. The OP wants rolls which contain Indians and wheats from the teens and beyond. Hence, buying the auction that the OP did for a little more will yield much more exciting results and will be more in line with what is being sought after.
And what you really seeking? The chance that there will be a key date? You know those have all been picked out. And so what is left? A bunch of common coins, even if they are earlier dates.
I don't care. Go ahead and tell folks to waste their money. What you find on ebay has been searched and you are paying shipping. Not checking out what can be found local is stupid.
Agree with Larry in post #10. That box should be $75. $100 max. Someone is cleaning up reselling wheats.
Yes you should have. Assuming that they are unsearched, I would have been happy to pay you double that.
Yes I would love to find some key dates or a few AU hour BU coins. Maybe a rare double die. My expectations are not that high to find something worth hundreds of dollars, but my hopes are to find something valuable or just cool to keep. Beyond that, my collection of wheats has a lot of holes in it that I hope to fill. This is just as much about the enjoyment of the hunt as it is for the hopes of finding something valuable. Being that I've not done this before I don't know what to expect, so at very least it will be a learning experience.
Because I love hunting through coins trying to fill my collection, or finding something off value. I'm learning a lot about what to look for but I've not put what I've learned into practice, so a bulk but of pennies is a relatively cheap way to gain experience.
You very well could be right. But I still have hopes that you're wrong. Either way I will enjoy going through these and increasing my experience with coin searching. There way I see it, it will be a lesson that in the end will not cost me very much and will be an enjoyable time.
