Putting a Value on My Collection

Some folks on here use their collections as their long term investments and some of them do pretty well. Time flies by and there’s a chance some of these folks won’t get a chance to leave good instructions on how to intelligently cash in on their collections (perhaps an untimely death). Things happen. I can see your point, but you should also be willing to see mine, or at least agree to disagree. Right now, we’re beating a dead horse and quibbling.

Only that? Heck, I can kick back. Done and dusted, baby. I have an active collector son, aged 23. Hey, do you think that maybe by making coins FUN and not being so darned serious about the economic end of the world, I might have helped that? Hmm. Here's a hint. He couldn't give a rodent's rump about silver or gold. Coins are coins, to me and to him.

Why would a kid born in 1995 care about silver coming out of coins in 1964? He wouldn't and he shouldn't, and he doesn't. It's all ancient history to him. It would be like my caring about the move from Sterling in 1920 by the Brits. Silver is OUR generation's fetish, not his.

I’m also setting up my wife so she won’t have to sweat money — the coin collection totally aside. But if she can get, say, $20,000 at a fair price for it, I’d sure prefer that over $5,000.

    Why wouldn’t I?

I'm trying to get dog/cat to take the exhibiting judging course, but so far, all he wants to do is knock every coin he sees onto the floor. When I'm judging, I'm only doing that metaphorically. :troll:

Your son seems to be a good guy. Your collection, I bet, will be in superb hands.

Oh, I'm more than willing to see your point. I have no problem whatsoever with someone who wants to maximize his heir's return. It's just not worth the extra work to me to educate my totally uninterested wife--any more than it's worth the effort to her to educate me on her glass collection.

Good thing I'm doing this pricing task.
I keep finding errors in my inventory.
I've got all the info about my coins
    BUT
have messed up with what belongs to what on some of them (date/mm with slab number).
Best Guess: When using sorting in Excel I wasn't careful enough.
My clue was that I've got $100 coins priced as $500 and vice versa.

My collection SLIGHTLY was built on the shoulders of my Dad’s. Hopefully my son will be able to pass it along to his kid(s), with HIS additions.

Three days after you're cold in the ground your son will be in Vegas trying to double the cash value of your collection.

@kanga Still, let your wife know the approx minimum you think any dealer should give for your collection. Seriously. I am not saying it will happen with the dealer you 'trust' but many people have been known to play people for years before they strike to get something for nothing (steal) or a pittance (cheat/rob). I won't do into it, but someone I trusted and liked played me for over four years for some of my property, and the circumstances were such I had little recourse, and no clear guaranteed recourse, but with even more outlay from me, money-wise to try. And he did it by scamming two 'friends' of mine into helping make it happen. In hindsight, it likely would have happened anyways without having those two 'friends' be complicit, because once it happened I recognized the other things he was doing to set it up. And all the things he had done to work it that it would go that way. All I can do is accept it happened, not trust those who seem to have been honest dealing people as they may only be waiting for an opportunity.

All I can do is believe that karma will hit those three people.

Anyways, I don't know your dealer, but I would definitely not believe that all who have treated you fairly while you are alive and knowledgeable will do the same for your heirs.

Well at least he’ll get better odds there, unlike PA. But no, he seems to have hooked up with a very conservative girl, whose father is a preacher. Also, his mom, my ex, is Greek Orthodox. They read the New Testament untranslated, in chant, no less.

Yep, found out one place that my inventory is out of wack.
Hopefully it's not rife through the rest of my inventory.
I'll add a code to each entry in my Excel file that will take care of that.
But first I have to correct the existing errors.

This definitely slows down the valuing of my collection BUT once the coding is done I shouldn't ever have to do it again (fingers crossed).

You wanna make it easy for your wife? then liquidate
as much as possible now. For most of your collection,
I would recommend Great Collections for the best and
quickest disposal. Ian is great!! The rest should go to
the LCS. This may not be what you want, but it would
be best for your grieving wife. I hope you are around
many many years from now to re-read this post.
