This is my newest buy, and I wonder if I paid too much or too little for it. Please comment and make any other criticisms you feel are warranted!
It can be a bit hard to explain, you get the eye by looking at lots of coins, but I'll try to explain a bit... We're just trying to read photos, obviously, but the obverse just has that dipped look to me. Slight wear, but the surfaces shouldn't look this dead, the color isn't quite what you see on a naturally circulated coin, and there should be a bit of toning or dirt in the crevices. Now the reverse looks off too, but different. There appears to be some horizontal lines in the fields, abrasively cleaned or perhaps an attempt to whiz it? There does appear to be pitting there too, as has been mentioned.
Now for the reveal. I went to the state numismatic annual coin show and bought two coins. I picked this one out of a bag of Morgans that were going for $18 each. This one was the best of the lot, but I admit I didn't look too hard at it. It was a hole filler for me and it had a decent amount of shine to it. Yeah, I know, I'm shallow! And I had an idea something was different about it when I took a second look at it. You can't see it in the pics, but on the obverse there are two pie slice shapes with the apex of both at the ear that are reflective when you move the coin under a light. But for now I'm okay with it. And the comments here are helping me learn. Which is why I hang out here!
