Clearly, they've not thought this whole 'coinless' nonsense suggestion all the way through. Several other issues: 1: The powerful coin-laundry lobby won't allow the elimination of coins. 2: The WTO will move to defend the jobs of coin counterfeiters world-wide. 3: Teenagers need to be able to answer the question: "What happens when you drop a penny off the Empire State Building?". 4: When I'm taking a carriage ride through town what am I going to throw to the beggars and peasants? 5: How can you have a decent bar fight without a roll of quarters?
Paying the kid down the street to cut your grass? Helping a person down on their luck to get a meal? Parish collection plate? And most of all. If the power does go out for any length of time, I still need cash to get a bite to eat!
Well I don't deal in drugs so I must be a Mobster. Pretty much everything, although sometimes I use a check. About the only time I pay for things electronically or with a credit card is when I make a purchase online. Paypal believe it or not a lot of them have Obamaphones and Square and can take electronic payments. Checks work well. Where? If power is out most everyplace will be closed and even if they aren't they can't take payments because their registers aren't working. They can't add up your bill and there is nothing to tell them how much change to give you.

We will be a cashless society soon. Paper houses built out of nothing have to fall sooner or later. It's already later.
Have a look at the story that @CoinCorgi posted just before your message. Besides, even in Sweden, where the cashless society is closer than in the US, they still have coins and notes ... Christian
I meant a cashless society, as in a valueless society. I detest people who pay for a cup of coffee with a card too.
Although I don't buy cups of coffee, I probably fall into your detestable category as I make at least 10 small purchases with a card every month. The reason for my small charges is that I have an interest-paying checking account with certain monthly requirements. One is that I have at least 10 charges on my bank debit card, and my rule is that I only use it for charges of $10 or less. If I bought cups of coffee, I would almost certainly use my bank card to pay for them.
Well, yeah but I understand. I personally do as much as possible to NOT be tracked so I'd not go that route probably ever anyway. At least you're not paying by check.
well if you go by the US Mint circulating coin numbers .. sooner or later there won't be any coins in circulation, technically.
A cashless society is coming but not in my lifetime. Therefore I could care less. I deal with reality as it is in today's world.
The underground economy is too large to allow for a cashless society. If coins and notes go away, something will take their place. I could see bullion coins and pre 1965 becoming very popular. Untraceable and easily exchangeable for “legitimate” electronic funds.
Now look at the last 7 years. 09/10 only had declines because of the economy. Whenever the economy tanks all the change from coin jars and cup holders etc get spent and put back into circulation. There’s no shortage of cash or coins being made and used
