I am grading some mercs for a friend from work. Most are low grade. Here's the question. When u have any coin that one side is graded higher than the other, do u take the lowest grade, the average of the 2, the highest grade, the obverse or reverse. My thought is the lowest. Opinions please. Just wondering.
Depending on the surfaces they may grade somewhere in the middle, for me I grade them on the low side.
If you're trying to sell it, you use the higher grade. If you're trying to buy it, you use the lower grade. Seriously though, if they are close then often the obverse grade will carry it. I prefer, however, to give a split grade: call out both sides, and then let the observer make up their own mind. Thus, you could have an F-12/VG-8 obv/rev.
