Some Costa Rican 1923 Counterstamps that I picked up at a random auction one day. And probably paid too much. :p

Since others are doing I'll join in. T 100_4449.JPG 100_4443.JPG his is one I sold a few weeks ago. The person that bought it had a point, he thinks it's the only stamp of this type on a 1832 large letters.

I love those Costa Rica coins. I have two or three of them. not sure what they are worth but they are worth having.

As for the Houcks Panacea, that is one of my dream coins. Someday I will buy one.... If yours was on ebay then I bid on it but did not compete with the serious buyers. Some day.....

The Bil-Mar counterstamps don't come up often, so I had to wait awhile before I had the opportunity to buy one. I'm familiar with the"Tis an old rye" issue, but also have no identification. It would likely be issued by a distiller, but I can't find anything out about it, JBK. As you know, Brunk lists it, but offers no attribution.

There was a great deal of counterstamping of coins in that era, so much so that it became illegal to "deface" coins that way. Not only in England, but in France as well.

That's a great find of "Pear's Soap" and "Empire Theatre" counterstamps on the same coin. You don't often see competing stamps like that. It's like a buy one, get one free. The real bonus is that they're both high quality stamps and generally nicely applied.

Great find on the error nickel. It's very fortunate that you noticed it before counterstamping.

    Here's my "Pear's Soap" example.

That's a nice Pears. I still buy them when the price is right, but I am starting to pass on ones with too much verdigris, etc. I did see one that was in a group of counterstamps, and I was outbid as I think one of the others was desirable. That Pears seemed to have some light, raised Pears Soap text on the reverse, making me think that these were done on some sort of contraption that held the stamp in place. That would explain the excellent quality of most of the counterstamps, and if some sort of set up was used then maybe the stamp hit the underlying anvil or plate a few times without a coin in between, creating a "die" that imparted the light text when the other side was being stamped. I will keep my eye open for more examples of this effect.

That's interesting, JBK. I'll have to take a look at mine. Would you happen to have a photo of it that might show the effect?

I have a 2004 D Michigan state quarter with a stamp across the back reading
“1/4 NOTES”, is there any value for this coin other than .25 cents.?

The coin in the same condition NOT counterstamped, if worth more than 25 ¢, possible, but somewhere between 25 and that amount. In other words, the counterstamp MOST LIKELY reduces the value, but never below the face value. In some cases, I suppose, some counterstamps might have historic value and or significance, but not on late model stuff like this.

There are some people who like to collect counterstamps, but I don't have any idea what the value would be.

I haven't seen this one before, NIkki, and have no idea what the stamp means. Can you post a picture of it? That might give me some ideas.

I just came across this older thread and I've since discovered what the "1/4 Notes" stamp means, Nikki. I hope you'll see my response.

Thousands of State Quarters were stamped with this slogan starting in 2008 by a group called Quarter Notes Ltd. in Stampville, PR. They refer to this as the "State Quarter Counterstamp Project." I'm a little confused as to their motive for doing so, but my best guess is that it's an effort to promote various interests or "causes" by stamping modern circulating coins. I think another reason was to draw attention to the State Quarter issues. Apparently, other slogans have been issued by this group over the years.

They claim to have struck several hundred thousand coins as of today, but I've only seen a single one. I'll post a picture of my example. This would be easy to miss in circulation, as the stamp is difficult to see among the design elements of the host coin.

Other than the above, I know very little about the group. I'm in the process of investigating them further, because they've drawn my attention. I can't let a mystery pass without an effort to solve it. As far as value. Maybe just a small amount over face to someone interested in them...like me.

Fascinating, Bruce. I hope you'll keep us updated.

From the look of the counterstamp, I'd guess it is one of those punch holders that use interchangeable type so you can create custom stamps.

I would love to see their basis for the claim of "several hundred thousand" coins counterstamped. That is a HUGE undertaking not only in obtaining the coins but getting them back into circulation as well.

I have seen a couple other counterstamps that have a similar look - I wonder if they were made by the same outfit.

I'll be sure to post anything new here, Jeff. Since my first post, I've been checking into them a bit more. The claim of several hundred thousand is astounding for sure.

I did a quick search for these people and found nothing so good detective work on your part if you found anything at all.

Elsewhere (maybe Coin Community, not sure) I had seen in the past some quarters that were stamped with a similar looking punch. One was on a DC quarter and had an anti-Nancy Pelosi c/st ("All kneel before Queen Nancy" or something like that), and one was on a NY quarter ("Suckd Orange" - supposedly some famous author said NYC was like a "sucked orange").

Come to think of it, l I might have bought one of these "1/4 NOTES" quarters on eBay within the past year - I need to get my stuff organized!

Edit: actually, I think it says something else, but similar type style. I will have to look for it.
