Thanks @Ken Dorney what do you think of the other coin I posted? The one with aggripina? is the patina natural?
Looks fine as well, and I think its likely natural. But for my taste I would not clean it. I prefer some originality and highlighting on my coins (which is why I prefer base metals over silver and gold).
If you feel cgb is pushing a fake on you in the first case, you should find another coin from a more trusted dealer and one where you can see the coin in person and convince yourself without asking people who are only able to see a photograph. There is no absolute safety in collecting. You could send the coin to three different expert services and still be wrong on a rare occasion. In ancients, we might be 99.9% sure but there is always a chance that we are one step behind the fakers. If you refuse to deal only with dealers you trust and prefer the opinions of people on CT who tell you the coin is fake, you really should find a hobby where you can be comfortable with whatever it is you are buying. Of the two, I prefer neither but not because one is more likely to be real. Both coins have the date off flan as do many of these with dates near the edge. I'd hold out for one like Gavin's with date if I were looking for an edge dated coin to go with my earlier style. BTW mine is one year older than Mat's and two older than Gavin's. If you wish you can tell me if you think mine is fake but I'm stuck; the previous owner died thirty years ago so returning is out of the question.
@dougsmit your coin looks good. by the way I just noticed the second coin on obverse bottom edge looks like it has a big seam line going around the edge. does it prove it's cast? @dougsmit your coin looks good. by the way I just noticed the second coin on obverse bottom edge looks like it has a big seam line going around the edge. does it prove it's cast?
I can't say it any better than Doug. CGB knows what they are doing. If you don't trust them don't buy. I don't see a seam on the coin. It's from the lighting... The only way to see a seam is with an edge photo.
This is an important point to consider. I collect the Flavian series of Antiochene tets and the date must be visible. A tet lacking a date can never be precisely attributed.
Thanks @Jay GT4 I did heard from many dealers and expert that CGB is very reliable and I am hoping these coins are authentic and I am wrong but if you look carefully you will see a big seam line going on bottom of coin. I highlighted to be easier to see it. I will know it for sure once I get the coin but if it is indeed a seam would you agree it will be suspicious in that case?
Thanks Jay I am really hoping its not seam too. I am so tired of looking for a good authentic Nero tetradrachm so I really hope this coin has no issues like seam/filing edge etc when I receive it at hand.
The evidence is apparent it is cast. here Cast-away joking and I am allowed to have an opinion. Is it true? maybe, maybe not.. My comments arent written in stone. But I smell a rat here. i dont trust either coins. If i owned them i would always wonder if they were real or not. Thank you April
If you use lost wax casting, there will be NO CASTING SEAM! You will only have a seam, where the two halves are merged together. At lost wax casting there will not be 2 halves merged together and so no casting seam. Lost wax can be combined with sand cast or pressure cast or centrifugal cast. And of course the seam and casting residual (sprue where the channel was), will be removed on almost all cast fakes. RomanGreekCoin3 are you Lluís from cfdl? If you pretend that an authentic coin is fake you harm a dealer or auction house so they can sue you for libel and if they were not able to sell the coin and if they can prove that they would have sold the coin if you would not have condemned the coin they can claim compensation (for damages) .
