Okay, I'm setting up my scope. First, "Mine Eyes have seen the Glory of the Coinage, Oh my Lord!" Second, even before having the lighting set up, just to do the basic optical set-up, I threw a junk nickel under there. Nothing special, pocket change. "Holy false positives, Batman!" It instantly looks like there's all KINDS of interesting stuff on there. As well as the 3D making the darned thing look as thick as a piedfort. NO WONDER all these newbs with magnification out the wazoo to play with think they have stuff. It's a new world, baby.
Okay Kurt, we're holding our collective breath, just waiting for you to lob all manner of new discoveries at us to confirm that you've hit the lottery.
When I started CRH I found everything you can image with high magnification you can see a lot of things that aren't there. But I soon found out it was better to use a 10 nothing more in my case anyway. Dave
And I'm starting at 3.5x! Now I HAVE TO get my camera adapter ordered. I found a good secondhand Sony body that can take xenForo sized pictures. I think they call it a NEX-3.
Just looking at cloud formations...........it's danged incredible what you and your imagination can see. And it's danged incredible what you can see with an 18x loupe, not to mention a microscope. Sometimes you see more than you want to.
Nah, if I start posting varieties, you have my permission to smack me. This enterprise is all about being able to show pics of my newps. At 3.5x my field of view is a silver dollar, edge to edge. At 45x, well, it gets bit sick. I may decide to post a full pic of my 1970-S small date in MS66RD, just to show the whole dealio in one shot. I'm thinking my MS67 rate from bag pulls HAS TO go up.
Kirk, what model did you get? You are a little confusing about the magnification. I assume you have eyepieces that are 10X, and objectives that vary from 0.35X to 4.5X ? or something different? Jim
The eyepieces are 10x. The zoom knob is 0.7x to 4.5x, and there's a 0.5x detachable Barlow. I was sans Barlow before, so I was at 7x, not 3.5x. The field diameter with the Barlow on is HUGE.
I may go nuts someday and add a backlight unit for other translucent or transparent stuff. For now, this'll upgrade my competitive exhibit pics for ANA Philly. I just put the vinyl cover on the scope and it looks like a Klansman.
Good luck with your new toy! I am looking forward to your handy work. Edit. Are you able to get full size Morgan shots with it?
You know it's coming. Any thoughts on the over/under on when @V. Kurt Bellman posts his first "is this a double [sic] die?" question accompanied by a 20x micrograph?
Can’t happen. Not even looking at that. What I AM seeing is slabbed coins with active corrosion going. A quality scope seems to be the natural enemy of PCGS. I haven’t had the time to get to the NGC ones yet.
