A couple of tips (hopefully) Take your time. I repeat, take lots of time to drill the hold. They sell hole saw bits for cutting through tile. I would use one of those. You can find it at Home Depot. Use a regular cordless screwgun. They are variable speed and you are less likely to accidentally damage the pig. Go very slow. Since you don't want to damage any of the coins, you will not have the luxury of using a lubricant or cooling fluid to keep the pig from being damaged. The only alternative is to go very slowly. Put masking tape over the area you are drilling before you start. This will help to protect the surface. Use a vacuum to vacuum up the dust while you are drilling. Good Luck
wow a tremendous chance of al ifetime. Both to view a collection from several generations AND to spend some very valuable time with your grandfather!!! Enjoy both, and fill us in on how things go - with your grandpa and the coins
these kinds of stories remind me of the time i heard the story of a old man cashing in his collection at the bank he saved for years.
Well if I read this correctly you have a life size porcelian pig filled with coins form years and years ago. First and foremost, take physics into account! That pig is old, it is heavy, and the porcelian may not take the stress of a drilled hole into the belly of the pig. The chances are pretty good that if you breach the integrity of that Pig from below, the entire belly will be lost due to the mass being centered in that area. If it were me I would take it from the point of the least amount of stress. I understand the value of the Pig as well and would not breach the face but instead I would breach the rear of the Pig..yep ya got it! Give it a real poop shoot so to speak. The rear legs will support the hole and collaspe or severe fracture is reduced greatly! Just my two cents worth! Good luck and share the pics...:smile RickieB
RickieB has a very good point too. Also, have on hand something plastic or wood to get the coins out (PLEASE don't use a screwdriver or anything metal). Also, have on hand a method for sorting/protecting the coins as soon as you take them out.
