Its got Tyche, a filleted thunderbolt, and a date! I never thought that I would get one of these because when they are pretty, they get pricey. I think this one is beautiful. Fortunately for me, the dealer sold it cheap. #1 Please share in the happiness & post a coin. Maybe something with Tyche, a thunderbolt, or a date. #2 How's my descriptive coin label below? SYRIA, Seleukeia Pieria AR Tetradrachm. 100-99 B.C. Dated year 10 15.05 grams, 28 mm Obv: Tyche turreted and veiled head right. Rev: Filleted thunderbolt on cushion placed on throne, ΣEΛEYKEΩN THΣ IEΡAΣ above, KAI AYTONOMOY below, all within laurel wreath. I beneath throne, A at lower right Grade: Very choice EF or better. NGC claims AU 5/3. Other: Seleucia by the Sea is located on northern coast of modern day Syria near the Turkey border. Hoover 1382.6.A. From EAC 7-15-18.
Mine is the same year and rather porous. It was a blind purchase, which was not very smart but the coin turned out to be acceptable. SYRIA, Seleukeia Pieria AR tetradrachm, 30 mm, 14.81 gm Dated CY 10 (100/99 BC) Obv: veiled and turreted bust of Tyche right Rev: filleted thunderbolt on throne; ΣEΛEYKEΩN THΣ IEΡAΣ above; I (date) between legs of throne, A to lower right; KAI AYTONOMOY; all within wreath Ref: Callataÿ, Production, p. 74, obv. die D16; HGC 9, 1382; DCA 697
I might be wrong about the Callatay die number. When I was researching the coin a few years ago I thought it was from 99/8 BCE instead of 100/99. I'll have to dig through my notes and bookmarks to look at it again. But yes-- they are obverse die matches. Edited: Oh, I remember the problem now. The year in BCE terms was different by one in Callatay's article compared to others I saw in archives. It was confusing and eventually I gave up and copied an attribution from a recent CNG sale . The obverse die number per Callatay's study is correct, D16. From La production des tetradrachmes civiques de la Cilicie jusqu' a la Palestine a la fin du He et dans la premiere moitie du r s. ay. J.-C. (Elaiussa Sebaste, Aigeai, Seleucie-de-Pierie, Laodicee, Arados, Tripolis, Sidon, Tyr, Ascalon) , Fr. De Callatay
haha..ok.. you are purdy good on figures like that..(i didn't read the 100BC Syrian moneyers gazette )
Those are great coins @Collect89 and @TIF I really like them. I might just have to add one to my want list given the Seleucid origin of the city.
Nice one! Here's a dated Tyche tetradrachm (I love this coin): PHOENICIA, Arados. AR Tetradrachm, 30mm, 15g, 12h; Dated CY 160 (100/99 BC). Obv.: Turreted, veiled and draped bust of Tyche right. Rev.: APAΔIΩN; Nike standing left, holding aplustre and palm; ΞP (date), Phoenician letter and ΘC in left field; all within wreath. Another Tyche though a bronze issue: PHOENICIA, Arados Æ17, 5.8g, 6h; 3rd-2nd Centuries BC Obv.: Turreted head of Tyche right. Rev.: Prow left, with figurehead of Athena Promachos My understanding is the date is below the prow, but I can't read it. I have a few various Greek coins which feature a thunderbolt reverse: Thurium in Lucania. Æ13. 2.65 g, 12h; 270-240 AD. Obv.: Laureate head of Apollo left. Rev.: ΘOYPIΩN, Winged thunderbolt, TH monogram below. Selge, Pisidia AE, 13.5mm, 2.48g, 12h; BC 300-190 Obv.: Bust of Heracles right Rev.: Σ E Λ across; thunderbolt and bow
