I have decided to turn my attention to Indian cents. I have read a few books and any articles I could find related to them. My question concerns raw BU listings. I have read about what to look for to tell if a coin has been cleaned. That helps if “coin is in hand”. But reviewing them at auction sites F2C476BC-E031-4D61-8B97-B3569A9FAB7D.png is a different matter. I located one that goes on the block next week, it looks good, but it has, for lack of better words, shiny areas on the high points, ie, feather tips, eye brow, cheek, hair line. Is this an indication of over cleaning?
    Thanks for your help.

It's an indication of wear, the luster has been worn off the high points.

That 9 looks odd. Maybe you want to share this in the error section of CT. I am not a professional when it comes to varieties but I know the IHC has plenty. There are those that are more knowledgeable than I there. Nice coin btw.

The lighting used for the image created much of the shiny areas.

The higher points on all coins are signs of wear. This IHC is no different. The shiny spots are were the coin has been worn enough to remove the original Mint luster and replace that luster with the oil on ones fingers. Great looking coin otherwise but not a Mint State coin.

    I agree.
The luster and color change says light rubbing there.
And I took a quick look at Snow's Guide but don't see anything close to the "thing" at the NE of the "9".
Outside shot at a die crack or die scratch. Or die chip.

For my IHC set since they are all MS I bought all of them in slabs.

I have bought a few in slabs, but have seen some very nice raw UNC’s. This one is listed as BU. But with rub (wear) marks it raised a flag with me. So it is actually an AU coin. Thanks for sharing. Majority of my purchases have been on line, due to the fact, that it is 250 mile road trip to a decent LCS.

I like Indian Cents a great deal; however, my huge worry is the claim that any copper that bright has been dipped - and will likely go from Red back to Brown over a couple of decades. The premium for full Red is outrageous and very volatile.

That is what I've read, at any rate - so I'm sheepish.
