If you want to pay a goodly sum for an ugly coin, may I call your attention to the impaired Morgan dollar proofs.

My vote is the 1909-S VDB. And I must agree with Mr. Bellman about PA farmers who still have their Milk and Egg money handing it down from generation to generation of farmers. There is one farming family in Wayne County who have three 1895 Proof Morgan Dollars. They had an uncirculated set of 2 1/2 Indians but sold that in the early 1980's (saw the 1895 proofs, bought the 2 1/2 set). They also have thousands of silver dollars. Those farmers in Northeastern PA don't sell much of anything and now with gas royalties, they don't need to.

I would add the 1844 dime, single most overrated Seated coin. There is a hoard of about 600 pieces o (not including the coins already known) yet prices are still very high. Many coins from that series are much rarer and have much lower prices.

Also, the 1995-W silver eagle. It's not rare. At all. 30125 pieces made and I'd expect the survival rate is pretty high, yet it still sells for four figures.

Of the 6 you list I would rank them

    1. 1909 SVDB
    2. 1942 D 42/1 dime (after all you don't really need this for a complete date & mint set.
    3. & 4. I'm kind of at a toss up between the 1877 cent and the 1916 D dime. I think they both have around the same availability. I believe the dime is higher priced though so it may edge out.
    5. 1893 S dollar
    6. 1916 Standing quarter. This is actually a scarce to rare coin though. Mintage of only 52,000 that actually entered circulation with a date that wore off quickly. A GREAT many of these have probably been scrapped over the years and probably a large percentage of the surviving specimens are dateless pieces that are identified by the design differences.

There are currently only 25 dated 1916 standing quarters on ebay, and about 10 to 15 more dateless ones. There are a few hundred S VDB's, a couple hundred 1877 cents, over a hundred 1916 D dimes, close to 50 1942/1 D dimes, and over 100 1893 S dollars.

Forget the price, I don't think you can call a coin that has a total known population (and I don't mean pop reports) of less than 20 pieces common by any stretch of the imagination. That would be the same as calling the 1804 dollar a common rarity. The 1804 dollar may come on the market fairly frequently, so it is relatively available, but it isn't common.

I am going to say 1913 Liberty Nickels. They were illegally-made and should be confiscated by the Secret Service.

But on the list, I’d have to go with the 1909 S VDB. They are always available, and always expensive.

I’ve noticed that the prices for key date coins and types that used to be expensive are now becoming quite affordable nowadays. That is probably because the internet has revealed just how common these “rare” hole-fillers are.

    As for these:

Outside of plastic, these go for very reasonable amounts on eBay. In plastic, prices almost double.

    $3000 in Good? Geez.

Im not experienced enough to make an intelligent nomination to this discussion, but having collected the Wheat cents for more than sixty years, the 1914D still eludes me. I stopped bidding on them at eBay years ago since all of the decent ones were selling for more than I was willing to pay.

To be fair the 1856 FE cent is one of the most common patterns. There are many much rarer pattern coins that get no attention and sell for much less. Ever heard of the 1855 Flying Eagle large cent? The 1858 Indian Head Cent? They are both real patterns, both much rarer than the 1856 FE, and both sell for much less.

I think all of them are overpriced and multiples can be found at all major coin shows. I think the 1909-S VDB cent takes the cake though.

Easily the '09-S VDB. For fun, see how many are available at a small show. The 1916 SLQ is rare.

Out of the original list I only own the 1877 and the ....1906 s vdb.
Happy I did not pay much at all for them.

I may be severely attacked for this but in my opinion the 1879 CC is overpriced. I own a VG/F example but I can't get myself to buy a higher grade example at the prices.

1884 CC Morgan dollars. Almost a million exist in BU condition.

Actually, all Morgans are overpriced. They as common as dirt, even in high grades. I particularly loathe them.

Go to a dealers display and he'll have 4 cases of mint state Morgans - ask for a Peace Dollar and he'll root around in a box for a few minutes and pull out a couple of cleaned 21's.
