Hey All. I uncovered an extremely rare coin while metal detecting. It is a 1797 1/2 cent, gripped edge. I sent it to PCI for authentication and they graded it F12, corroded. The obverse if terrific. The reverse has the corrosion. PCGS goin value lists G and VG $$ amount in the tens of thousands. No $$ amount listed for grades above VG. They have only ever graded 2 coins of this type. How do you value this coin??

    How about a pic?

Not sure how PCGS or NGC would grade the coin but it Grey Sheets at $5,500 in AG, $13k in G and $32k in F. The corrosion would drop its value considerably from the F value.

To see what it is really worth you may want to consider consigning it to a major auction (e.g., Heritage).

Let's see the pic ! Most TPGs will image the coin at the time of slabbing. Well worth it for this one.

PCGS has graded 2, NGC none. I couldn't find any in Heritage's history.

If there are no comparable coins, the only way to establish a value is through a well advertised auction. Of course, then you won't own the coin anymore. :(

    Not necessarily so!

If you don't mind the auction house charges, just set a ridiculous reserve. It won't sell, but you can comfortably assign it the value of the second highest bid.

Hoping to see a pix of the coin to better estimate a value.

Has anyone ever seen one of these ? What the heck is a "gripped edge" ?

rock-n-roll... I presume the reason you're certain this is the "gripped edge" variety is because PCI certified it as such ?
