I can just imagine the detail on the little turtle shells, cast in silver. I bet they'd be popular 1 oz. ingots. As long as no baby turtle got harmed when the molds were made!

Those old threepence coins are fun. I always liked their dodecagonal shape (that's the fancy word for 12-sided), and their chunky thickness.

I just gave away a dozen of them as part of last month's giveaway! (See item D).

Wow! Early Washington! Great find! I've never dug one from the 1930s while detecting.

You had me going on the "E. LEE" thing. I was all like, "what's he going on about? Robert E. Lee?" Then I saw what you were talking about. But it took me a moment.

There's no graffiti there- it's just the leftover remnants of the bundle of arrows the eagle is perched on. They're arranged sort of like a fasces, which is also on the reverse of the "Mercury" dimes. The lines do sort of look like "E. LEE" if you look at 'em that way, but that's just a coincidence. It's a case of pareidolia - an optical illusion, in other words.

You can see the full fasces-like bundle of arrows on the reverse of this proof.

Amazing. I can't believe they still circulate.

I've never found one. Have found perhaps four Buffalo nickels in circulation over the decades, but those are the only obsolete types I've found, with a totally different design from the other coins in circulaton.

I don't count Wheat cents as a totally distinct obsolete type, since they had the same obverse as the Memorial cents that followed them. So it's not surprising to see them occasionally. But a 115 year old Indian cent in change is pretty remarkable.

I agree - I was pretty surprised. I got this a few years ago. I don't know if she got it from a customer or if it was in a roll of cents that she opened. She just handed it to me and said "I found this one for you".

I sure wish I was celebrating my thirteenth birthday! Well, on second thought, I don't think I'd want to go back any further than 22. In any case, Happy Birthday, Noah! And many, many more! Enjoy!
