I got this IHC back from ANACS in early December. I can only speculate what got between the reverse die and the planchet to cause this mark. Any guesses? Anyone seen this one before?

    One's at 10x & the other is 60x at the 4 o'clock position.

Looks like a nasty die scratch to me.
Like someone dropped a pointed or bladed tool on the die.

BTW, are those die cracks up around the shield?

Is it raised on the coin?

It looks like a gouge in the coin itself, not the die. Hard to say from the photos if the planchet was gouged or if the gouge occurred post-mint.

Sorry about the photos but those are dog hairs on the reverse not die cracks.

ANACS has called this as an "1898 MS63 RB STRUCK THRU" Thanks ahead of time.

Just looking for some opinions here.

The mark is indented in the coin. It is not a die gouge. ANACS determined it to be "Struck Thru" and that's all they said. They didn't say grease or metal chip, fingernail or hounds tooth. It is was it was.

Does this detract much from it's value? Or are ther collectors who seek these out?

It's my best grade 1898 IHC so far!!!

If the die was indented then the coin would have an extended piece of metal, not the gouge seen here.

Again, sorry about the dog hair. I'll have to get on her for perusing my coins again.

Odd, my first guess would have been a planchet void. Seeing it was graded as a strikethrough by ANACS, I'm at a loss to tell what it was struck through. Maybe a piece of metal or a small shaving from another planchet or wood. Can't really tell from the photos. Neat coin though & thanks for sharing...Mike

p.s. I think that you'll find that the coin will bring about the same or slightly less than a regular coin in the same grade. I don't know many collectors that would pay a premium for a strikethrough of that nature, but who knows really.
