Not Silver Wartime Nickels but Copper/Nickel

Is there any record of anyone finding wartime nickels that were made out of copper nickel instead of silver? I believe I have to copper nickel wartime nickels. One is a 1943 p and the other is a 1944 p. Both look exactly like the silver wartime nickels, weigh the same as The Silver wartime nickels, but have no ping like a wartime silver nickel does when dropped on a table. I just have a dull thud when dropped on the table. I have about 40 of the silver war nickels, without a doubt, these two or not made out of silver. I'm just wondering if any have ever been documented, that were not made out of silver.

Don't use sound as a diagnostic. Too unreliable.

I don't do the drop test too. I tried before but depending upon how I dropped it, etc I could make it sound differently.

I've done the sound test probably a hundred times. I'll put them in the mix of the 40 silver ones, and I can pick these two out every time.

 

Metal analysts would need to be done. Could proabably be done at a pawn shop or jewelry store.

 

If the planchets are internally flawed it can result in what is known as a "dumb" planchet that won't "ring". The poor alloy choice for the war nickels make them have a higher percentage of dumb planchets than most other series.

 

Color is correct for silver.

 

Environmental damage IMO. I have a couple of nickels that look just like those.

 

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I first thought of Henning(?) nickels, nickels a counterfeiter made using WWII dates. However, those would not look that color and did not have the large mintmarks on the reverse.

I think they are simply correct nickels that may sound different for some reason.

Edit: Just looked it up and Henning's were all dated 1944 with no mintmark. So not a Henning.

 

Nice investigative work. I do like the planchet Theory. I'll I've bounced them for my parents to hear, as well as my son, and they all definitely hear the difference from 40 silver -2 non-silver coins and had no problems making out these exact two coins

 

If these two coins did happened to turn out to be made up of copper/nickel, those would be two very valuable nickels, I would think.

 

....but they're not.

 

It is obvious that you don't have what you think you have. I knew they were regular war nickels when you said that you had TWO errors. Realistically, think of the odds of that happening.

But, what are the odds, that stranger things HAVE happened?

I think you got me all wrong, I love the opinions I have received here. I can take the good with the bad. I apologize for leading you to that conclusion.

 

Looks like a silver serving set that hasn’t been polished in eons.

By the way, I’m sure you know this, don’t polish them.

 

I'm sure you have probably already seen this, regarding the copper nickel planchets, in place of the wartime silver planchets.
