i was hoping someone could help me out with a grade and value on this coin. It’s pretty rare but I can’t settle on a grade or value. I don’t believe it has been cleaned or altered in anyway but I’ve been wrong before.
You think it’s been cleaned huh? I seen the lines too. The coin has set in a safety deposit box for 60 years and was carried as a good luck charm prior to that so if it was cleaned it was a long time ago.
The more I look at it the more I see evidence of cleaning, I just didn’t want to see it at first I don’t think.
Just on a glance it has the look of one that's been cleaned (perhaps long ago based on what you said). It doesn't have that crusty original look collectors of old rare gold are after especially in this grade range. It's still a nice rare coin that I'd be happy to own. Did you buy it from a trusted source? I'd be a little cautious with such an expensive raw coin.
I don’t own it, at least not yet. It was my grandfathers and my dad just recently inherited it as my grandpa passed away. He received it from his father in law around 1948 as a marriage gift. My dad doesn’t collect and I want it but I’m not sure what to offer. I was thinking $2800 but maybe that’s to high if it’s been cleaned. I plan to have it slabbed and I will be pissed if I get a purple details holder. Lol
When I first seen it a few hours ago I was blown away when I seen the cc on it. I knew the coin had been in the bank box all these years but I had no idea it was a Carson city.
I would send it to get graded and make an offer based on the results. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be details but considering it was your grandpas that shouldn’t matter at all what a cool coin to keep in the family.

VF Cleaned. The color is wrong for an original coin. Hard to give a value, but I would say around $2500.
I see xf 40 details I think it’s had an ancient cleaning too. In hand I may feel differently tho is very tough to tell from the pics as the color looks odd. I have no doubt it’s real though
Yea the color is off in the pics, looks different in person. I’m going to look at it a little closer through a loop tomorrow and see what I think.
Lowest result I see is $1k for a badly damaged vf. I saw a cleaned au at $4k. Id say cleaned vf-xf at $2k- $2800. It’s not a horrifically harsh cleaning I’d say an offer of $2k would be fair
I'm growing obsessed with the half eagle. I got three of them from my mother in law (1881, 1907, and 1911D). Circulated but not cleaned or anything. I'd love to own one from the Capped Bust era (1813 - 1834). That CC would be fine with me to own also. I don't consider cleaned coins to be dead like some collectors - they may not be as nice as the original surface coins but they still represent the mintage.
