Need some help -- Is this "atheist" penny - 1977 it also looks like rotated die error on both sides and border error -?? Pretty new at this and I know u all are pretty rough on peeps -- butt I can't find much on this penny .
heard of it ... I just googled it and got this one of many hits http://www.ingodwetrustonmoney.com/atheist-cents.html looks like a cud over the WE TRUST
We're rough on people who come in insisting that they've struck it rich because they found a coin that was run over in the parking lot or pounded with a hammer. This ain't one of those! That's a massive cud (where a piece has broken off the die). See how the letters on the reverse are weaker in the same place where the cud appears on the obverse? The two dies are supposed to press the planchet together between them, but since a big chunk of that obverse die was gone, there wasn't enough pressure there to bring up the design on the reverse there. I also see a strong clash above LIBERTY -- those vertical lines are the columns from the Lincoln Memorial. The dies hit each other without a planchet in between, stamping the reverse design into the obverse die. I wonder if that was what fractured the obverse die? I don't know if this coin is worth much, but it's a BIG winner for being interesting. Thanks for posting it!
Awesome -and thank you - really neat to see info about these- very glad I posted now -- thanks so much
Ok - thank you !! I will - so cool to find it - it's so neat learning about all the diff coins - and errors -- never knew there were sooooo many -
I'd say so. The first one's a bit blurry, but plenty clear enough to show what's going on. If you're looking to improve your photography, there are plenty of folks here to offer advice on that, too.
Very cool coin! I might suggest you try scanning your coins if you can. That's what I'm doing since I don't trust my camera skills.
A nice cud like that could bring up to $20 or so to those who collect them. The bigger the better,.....
