Possible mint mistake?

I got a 2011 D Nickel today that looks to be messed up from the mint on the face side. On the edge reading "In God We Trust" The rim is smeared (best way I can describe it) and keeps the same depth as the rest of the rim, so its not like something smashed it. The face rim is also considerably thinner in thickness then the back side of the coin, leading me to believe this might be a mint mistake, considering how new the coin is as well since it hasn't been around for decades.

The smearing feels flat, but I don't have a thickness measuring device. maybe a quarter millimeter in difference at most. Even though it appears "wavy" in light refraction. The smear is also roughly the same height as the text on the coin so the rim and text bleed together.

I could really use some help here in determining what I have. Thanks for the help mates!

Interesting but you are gonna have to produce better images, to support your theory.

These are as close and clear as I can get with my cell phones camera. I'd also like to add that the rim changes width around the coin, almost like a when struck it wasn't centered.

I agree it didn't leave the mint that way. PMD
The slight uncentered looking rim is common.

After using my dad's digital thickness measuring device the coin is ~1.95 mm all around the rim.

The metal is missing cant be a cud. Cuds add to the coin, not take away.

Tomorrow I'm taking it to a coin shop and get some more information there. Like i said, its the standard size for a nickel. and from what I measured the rim doesn't vary is thickness. Maybe the have more accurate test they can do.

It looks like the edge got sheared off somehow, PMD/PSD.

Go to doubleddie.com and select "How dies are made". This will teach you the minting process and help you understand the damage you see on the coins you find could not have happened at the mint and therefore cannot be error varieties. This will prove invaluable as you learn this hobby of ours.

After going to 3 different shops 1 said it was PMD and 1 said it was a Minting error. The third couldn't give me a definitive answer so I'm back where I started. :banghead:

Go to the first shop for any error purchases, as it is PMD. Looks to be sheared off at an angle, some of the metal forming the lettering were "smeared" as you say as the metal was scraped at an angle, maybe in a metal shop class.

The only reason 1 said it was a minting error was because from what he could tell the whole rim was the same height on both the front and back of the coin and didn't appear to be shaved down. The guy that said it was a PDM didn't even really examine the coin.

This is dispositive of post mint damage as the only other possibility would be a cud, but the rim bulges slightly when a cud is formed.

You can get back to where you started if you want or you can think through the minting process and how cuds are formed. From there logic dictates this is not a mint made error.
