Hello! I hope everyone is doing great today. I found this 1992 D penny in a roll today. It appears as if there is a doubled die mint mark. It is very clear that there is an error but I'm not sure if it is an actual doubled die or a machine doubling... Can anyone tell the difference? I am still new to this and still learning how to tell the differences in errors.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

It's zinc rot, not a doubled mint mark.

Looks like a possible copper-plating 'bubble'
to the lower right side of the MM.

Thank you all so much! I love how helpful everyone is on my posts. It definitely makes it easier for someone new to this. I am learning a lot just by reading the threads.

Thank you for that! I think it helps a little but I'm still unsure about how to differentiate between the two on the coins. It's probably because I am still so new to this. This 1983 D nickel I just found a few minutes ago from my coin roll has a very clear doubling but parts of it look like both. I think it is machine doubling but I can't tell for sure. It's the most obvious one that I have found so far.

Based on your pics I would have to say DDD ( die deterioration doubling).JMO

It takes time to learn this. I can't tell you how many coins I first found I thought were doubled or perhaps other errors, but found out later (with study and info/knowledge) were junky. But the good thing is that keeping your 'errors' for a while and revisiting them as you learn more is cheap and easy. And there are good books and sites that will help you learn. When you revisit them and have to toss them (spend them) it puts it more clearly in your head what is DDD or other causes and not valuable, and lets you see what is.

Also start going to coin shows and if you see a doubled die coin for sale, ask to look at it.
