Totally support your statement. Did you see his first posting where he was belittled and mocked? I think that’s what set him off.

I don’t mind you backtracking, but when you say thick skin is required here, you’re implying it applies to everyone. And I would suggest it’s not just newcomers, they just get the bulk of it. Most don’t return, which I think is sad for our hobby.

I'd venture to add that most of those that don't return had absolutely no interest in the hobby and only wanted to 'strike it rich'.

Your guess is as good (or bad) as mine, but everyone must start somewhere. Lots of people start collecting for profit and start collecting for enjoyment. Some go the other way around and switch to profit. It makes sense to me that we treat all people as potential collectors as it benefits us all to have more people collecting.

How many people get turned off the hobby because they can't accept the wisdom that is given impartially? Once they start insisting that they have something they don't, then they feel insulted and leave. And that's their choice, and I'm not going to worry about them.

What many of them can’t comprehend is that we are talking about a coin — a glorified lump of metal — and not about THEM. When we suggest they do some research and studying, it’s the SAME THING most of us were told when starting to put our toe in the water.

What I am hearing is that we should treat them as if we were you @Seattlite86 We are not you, we are us. Of course we want more folks into the hobby, but at the same time, as a collective we each have our own personalities. I am a better numismatist, because of CT. There a lot of different styles of teaching some can be sarcastic, some can be very blatant, and there are those that will contradict everything said.

My point is that we can't coddle everyone. If a new member to CT decides to get inflamed about how they are responded to. Then some one struck a nerve and added some new knowledge to that individual, and neither you or I can say that it did or didn't spark some kind of interest in the Hobby. They are gone, and probably would still be, even if we told them what they wanted to hear.

Happy Independence day! Gotta get the BBQ fired up.

I once had a professor whose teaching style was to tear down everything you thought you knew, and then rebuild it with you under his watchful guidance. He was my favorite professor and I took every one of his classes I could take. While that was going on, there were other students dropping his classes and some even leaving school altogether, offended and appalled by his methods!

Point is, some are open minded and ready to learn, and others are so set in their ways and in love with themselves, they couldn't accept the truth if it were imparted by the Almighty himself!

The best professor I had did the same thing. A Marine reservist who had time in Vietnam would grin and tell us: “That’s how they trained us at Parris Island.”

The OP came here with fowl language, acting like a jerk. Even with that, he was told the truth. The OP created his own problem.

Actually, I went back and reviewed both of his earlier posts before writing that, just to make sure I had everything in the right perspective. I saw no belittling or mocking, just pretty much straightforward, honest responses. Unless those threads have been scrubbed, I saw nothing that warranted the OP starting this thread.

"Fowl" language. I like the pun from the flying eagle man himself!

First off let me say I do not believe for a second the CT is garbage. In fact it is first in my list of saved coin websites.

Having said that, I feel very lucky that CT was not my first introduction into online coin forums. If it was, with the questions I asked, I probably wouldn't be here today and I definitely share my collection like I do.

While I agree the OP of this thread was treated fairly and had no right to start a thread like this. There are many other new members (that are probably not members anymore) who would agree with much of what the OP said. In fact I have seen this site criticized on other websites by a couple of these members in the past for this exact reason.

I have seen these members pop up from time to time on other forums as well. I have actually called 1 or 2 of them out before when they acted the same way.

Remember how you felt when you first started collecting? I know for some of the members here that was a long time ago. Remember the first time you thought you had something valuable or significant? Now how would you feel if you showed that to someone and they made you feel stupid or really small for thinking it was something? I know I would feel terrible therefore I try to let new members down as gently as possible.

While over the past few months I have noticed the responses to new members getting better with less snarky remarks, this is still an ongoing problem with CT.

There is a lot to learn on this site with A LOT of very smart and knowledgeable members but unfortunately this is not the best site to cut your teeth on imo.

I know this reply will most likely get me some of the snarky remarks I am referring to so come one lets here them.;)

This site is a great place to learn. All you have to do is read, read, read AND don't ask stupid questions. Reading should learn ya good enough to know what a stupid question is.

Hmm I was always taught that there was no such thing as a stupid question. I guess I was taught wrong.

Just because most new members ask questions that are considered "Common Knowledge" to us seasoned collectors, it still doesn't make them stupid questions. Even if they are asked over and over again.

If you get tired of answering the same questions over and over then stop replying to them for a while. There are plenty of other members who can handle them. It takes less time to not reply than it does to make a snarky or sarcastic remark.

This is where the reading part comes in. Reading this site should learn ya good enough to know that the road rash silver shinny penny is just that - a common damaged coin worth 1 cent. Then take the next non-stupid step and DON'T ask the same damn question!!!

I think CT was my first online coin forum.
and my first thread was about how to clean my previously badly cleaned Trade Dollar. Got great tips behind the scenes on how to actually properly clean coins.
