I need some help I have alot of the 82 Penny's I think that have the small dates and they weigh 3.1 I'm just not sure about it so can someone help me figure this out
Welcome to Cointalk Based on that pic it appears to be large date also in the future it might help if you rotate your coin. JMO Here's a pic that helped me. Dave
I found the easiest way to tell one from the other is to look at the 2 and then the upper part of the 8. Look at the photos Dave posted.
I mean absolutely no offense, Floyd, but the fact you've two of them should have been suggestive. Welcome to the forum, sir.
Almost all large dates. In the second photo (Post #12, 3rd top row) That is a 1982-D small date, but probably (cough, cough) zinc. 2.5 grams. They made 17 billion cents in 1982. There's 1 1982-D small date copper. Are there any more? Maybe. Small date Philly zinc, and small date Philly copper in mint state condition carry a small premium. And that's it. The other 16 billion 999 million 900 thousand are worth 1 cent.
May I suggest a different approach? Your best bet would be to first learn how to identify the small from large (sufficient info has already been provided) to weed out the nothings, and then get rid of any Philly coins. When left with only small date Ds, pull those obviously made of zinc. Perhaps consider spending a very modest amount on a cheap scale.
