Was fishing thru moms collection. Found a 1909 plain that looks like a proof. Honest. I've never owned or knew i owed a 1909 anything. Please don't ask for pictures cuz i need to learn how to email and stuff first. What i need help with is a link with die markers of a plain matte 1909 proof. I tried but the v.d.b. and doubled die page keep showing up. I would like to figure this out myself with a little help. Then tackle the picture process.

Hey, best of luck...you've been on here awhile, gotta start posting pictures. Take a picture with your phone and e-mail it to yourself...save it to your computer...make a post and "Upload a File". Hope you got something.

Picture aren't great, but it is a nice cent for its age. Not a proof from what I can see.

Just a word of caution, and not to rain on your parade or anything, but it isn't uncommon to find squared up, thicker looking rims on 1909 Lincolns. I can't tell from your pics for sure, but look for a die scratch from Lincoln's back to the R in LIBERTY. And also look for a grouping of scratches/polish lines in the field right in front of Lincoln's face. Two easy die markers to find on a true 1909 matte proof. Lastly look at Lincoln's shoulder. If it is full of minor scratches and nicks, then it probably isn't a matte proof. Scratches and nicks on Lincolns shoulder are planchet marks that didn't get wiped out during striking. A true matte proof will never show planchet marks like that for the planchets never came in contact with each other prior to striking.

I am no pro but to me the rims don't look square enough to be a matte proof.

I hope you don't mind,I cropped and scaled up your photos a little. They aren't the clearest shots to see die markers with, but you can see the rims a little better. IMG_0570.jpg IMG_0571.JPG

Aren't those the markers for a matte proof 1909 VDB? Or am I mistaken? The OP's coin isn't a VDB... just a 1909-P.

Same obverse die was used for both the VDB and non VDB, im pretty sure.
