Okay, my Kindle is bigger than a phone, it's 8 inches long. But I've also read in other places that it's not so good to have anything below the table where you have to reach down out of the dealer's sight. Or to put anything on the table that could be used to slip a coin into or under. Maybe I should watch a dealer to see how he reacts to other customers.
What you say is true. I am scrupulous about leaving ALL dealer coins in fully plain view at all times, and usually ask to see only one or two coins at a time.
Me too. I seldom buy slabbed coins, but occasionally. Mostly I create slabbed coins, sometimes by submitting them right after I buy them. Pockets get a workout from 2x2 corners.
I just went to the Long Beach show, and I can't believe that it is all that much different from other large shows. Upon getting my lanyard, they also handed me a bag with advertising and stuff in it. After throwing away the extraneous stuff, I had a rather large bag to put stuff in. At small shows, they normally don't have bags to hand out, but I notice most people are carrying something (bag or case or...). As to where to place it while looking at a dealer's table, it is bad manners to place it on a display case since this restricts what other potential customers can look at. However when handed a box of coins to check, the dealer normally puts them on the case, and mostly a second box to put the coins into after you have checked them. This restricts other people from seeing into the case where the boxes are placed, but I can't help that. If standing, I place my bag on a chair. If sitting I place my bag on the floor or on my lap. Never had anyone to complain. BTW, at Long Beach I saw Charmey The Penny Lady and she said to say HI.
Looks good, but do you leave it zipped until you're ready to deal? I would imagine at that point you would keep the top in sight of the dealer so they can see what goes in and out.
Leave all coins out in the dealer’s view. And stay there if he gets distracted to make sure somebody else doesn’t try to walk off with them.
I do what Santini$ does. My bag is zipped and on my lap or an open spot on a table next to the display cases. If I move to go to my bag I put all coins down and show both sides of both hands to the "eye in the sky" (think Vegas blackjack dealer). Then I unzip my bag and get what I want (list, loupe, etc). Then close it up and go on with business. If I buy something I wait until all moneys have been transacted, stand up, open bag and put everything in it while it is on the table. Zip up, show both sides of my hands then walk away.
Oy vey! I just found a ridiculously sweet auction for Saturday just north of me. I should fill a 7070 hole or two. The auction viewing room opens at 7AM and it’s a good 90 min. drive from here. Guess I’m turning in early tomorrow night.
I normally wear cargo pants with velcro-sealing front pockets when I go to a coin show. After completing a purchase at a dealer's table, I stand up and put the coin(s) in one of the large front pockets. Easy for the dealer to see what I'm doing, plenty of storage space (if you're not buying slabs or bulk lots), and incidentally hard for a pickpocket to open surreptitiously.
Oh, boy. I'll be in MD, but probably another 90 min further south. Guess I won't be bidding against you this time...
I must admit that pickpocketing is a bit of a fear of mine. It hasn’t happened to me yet, but I would like some tips on how to avoid it. Is it just common sense (be aware of your surroundings, etc.)?
