I want to take a minute to thank everyone who has taken the time to respond to my numerous questions and genuine attempt to help me understand my new hobby, or at least, my old hobby. In a real, if not doomed attempt at learning the ins and outs of coins, their history, value and everything else that is involved in your community, I've learned that I just don't have what it takes. I came in happy, eager to learn and prepared to listen and participate. I leave with nothing but respect and thanks to all who guided me, even those I didn't agree with. And as for the few members who seemed determine to make sure whatever I said, did, think, act, was wrong.....You win. I'm gone. You know more than I do, you are the coin masters, I am dirt. I bow before you......well, not really, but my Mother taught me better to act like you. Peace
You were corrected when you posted wrong information. It's that simple. Folks correct me when I post wrong information. That's the way it should be. If you can't live with that, don't post anything you are not sure is correct.
You have what it take to be very good at coin collecting. As you read more articles and buy some coins, you become more educated about this hobby. You dont have to listen to everyone and you can block them also. Never give up.
Please don’t desert the hobby. Leave CT if you must. I would be saddened to see you go. But please keep your love of coins. I don’t have a fraction of the knowledge most here have earned. That does not change the awe and wonder I feel when I hold history in my hands. Please stick with the hobby.
There's no such thing as "not having what it takes" to learn about coins and numismatics. With enough time and research, anyone can learn the ins and outs of the hobby and I suggest you give it another try. Sometimes it may seem like people are out to prove you wrong but the vast majority of us are just trying to help.
It's taken me 8 years to learn what I know. That's excluding when I actually started collecting in the 70s. And I'm still learning. So being at it for a 11 days isn't much. It's like any hobby. The more I learn, the more I learn that there's much more to learn. And starting off looking for Errors & Varieties is just initially learning the wrong side of the hobby if you ask me. From your first post .. "errors and varieties" and "each new fact ... 3 more questions" It may be much more beneficial to read threads a lot. learn what people say and how they identify stuff .. mostly ppl posting about "errors" which are not errors. ie, most errors ppl post are not errors but damage. Just look at this new thread ==> https://www.cointalk.com/threads/are-these-error-pennies.318929/ It's the same thing over and over again, 99.9% of the time. It truly is never ending; there is just so much to learn.
I would still consider myself a newbie only taking up collecting in the past 2 years. I've taken and still take my lumps from many a member on here as well as dishing it out. I have used most all of that as a learning tool so I do not ask questions that with a little research, answer on my own. I see the same questions asked on here by so many newbies and not so newbies that it does get extremely repetitive over time and some lash out a bit because of it? Maybe you don't have the "bug" for collecting, but don't let what you see on here be your determining factor. Whatever your choice, it is your choice. Good luck.
I consider this place to be a primary source of information about the hobby. Other sources include books and videos, plus going to coin shows and shops. And I'm not going to leave here if I ever get shot down, because I know what I don't know.
I have a profound disgust for "experts" who suppress discussions and run off new people. If I owned this place the second time someone was guilty of that would earn them a lifetime ban. To those who think those people have some "right" to act like that imagine how you would appreciate it if some obnoxious stranger came to your place of business and caused your customers to leave. Surely you don't think that is fair to the business owner. Once that person leaves they are a walking billboard for how badly they were treated and cost you even more loss of potential members. All that happens so that some hater can bash other people. Those "experts" should open their own sites and shout at their followers. Any loss of members harms all of us but hey we still have the "experts" to run folks off.
This is so wrong. Quite often when I'm going out of town I check reviews online. Inevitably there are going to be some bad ones. I read them and balance them against the good ones. Unless they outweigh the good ones I ignore them. And I've been on here long enough to realize that there are some people who believe they are right and apparently can't believe that someone might actually know what they're talking about. So they leave. And you are asking us to waste our time on these people? If I am trying to learn, I shouldn't mind being told I'm wrong about something, but some people do and leave in a snit. Too bad for them.
I described the people and situations that disgust me. If you see yourself in the description shame on you. If you don't then you are defending a vile practice. You decide which is which. What you describe bears little resemblance to what I'm talking about.
I guess I don't understand maybe it's because I'm from Oklahoma and we are a bit slow here LOL. But I guess my point is if I was disgusted I would just leave why make a big deal out of it. No matter what chatroom you go to or website you're always going to find people that are sarcastic so just leave. Now with that being said I don't like seeing new people that have potential to learn the hobby leave but if your skin is so thin that a little sarcasm offends you then you probably shouldn't be here. But my love for the hobby is more important to me then a few sarcastic remarks from a few people. But the truth be told most people aren't willing to take the time to learn the hobby it's easier for them to look in their pocket and find change and come on here and ask the same questions over and over and over. As I have seen many times on here Google is your friend so take the time and research your coin so that way when you post you have some idea of what you have. I have found on coin talk that most people here want to help newbies but at some point you have to take an initiative to learn the hobby for yourself.JMO Dave
