Looking for info on a 1992 steel/nickel penny. I found one and would like to see if anyone as any knowledge of them.
The dozens that have been posted here on CoinTalk are never Steel Cents.. 1992 are struck on Copper plated Zinc planchets. Probably Environmental damage or the plating was removed to expose the Zinc.
Welcome To Cointalk If asking for advice it always helps if you can provide photos if not it's like buying a car in the dark. IMO Dave
Other than 1943, US minted steel cents do not exist. There are many privately plated cents making the rounds though.
USA Coin Book (online) lists 30. But they are not always accurate. 1944 P Steel Cent 30 (Good link though for people interested in this 1944 steelie.)
1944 transitional to 1992 ?? 'cept we're talking about a 1992 cent per the OP. science experiments, third party mints plating coins and reselling them, other damage .... so many out there that "look" like steel. maybe lack of information on the internet is more indicative of it doesn't exist ?.?.?.?.?
To make Money !! here is one quick example ==> https://www.merrickmint.com/24k-gold-plated-coins.html?limit=64 Someone will pay extra for, in these examples, gold plated Cents, ASEs, or whatever .. and then they find out that gold plated cents are worth ONE CENT ... and they end up in circulation. Then someone finds it on their pocket change and think they've struck the motherload as it MUST be a Mint Error !! or a science experiment in high school. I did tons of things to coins in high school, and I used to use pennies/ nickels / quarter as a buffer for hammering in jewelry work and other stuff. I've seen some "mint error" posts here on CT that look like stuff I've done with hammers to them. LMAO
https://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/gold-pennies/ Stop at step 4 you have "silver" cents, go all the way!!!! gold cents. 3 days laters the kids are bored and spends them .......and to other individuals.......to you......us
Mostly after market curio sets. Often high school science lab experiments. I have even seen them plated to match a jewelry component.
