unfortunately, this is the best pic avail on this coin. Can anyone tell with any certainty whether this is an open or closed 3 variety?
Also not sure of the denomination, but it looks "closed". At first I thought it was a $5 but the obverse doesn't match.
I can't really tell from the pictures. Compare to what is on http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/8966 pcgs.
Sorry for the incomplete info...it's a $20 coin. I read the rules, and I realize that buying or selling is not allowed on forums, but I have an opportunity to get this pretty cheap, am i allowed to ask your opinions? Or is that a no-no?
I would advise you to not give incorrect information. If you think it’s a cent how can you be so sure about the style of 3 in use.
Need better photos of both sides. Why isn't it in a slab? Open 3 1.5 million minted closed 3 200,000. Same prices up to MS and then the closed 3 gets expensive. You'd have to have someone check for authenticity. If it is a closed 3, and it's cheap, that rings a spider sense to me. I can't really tell if it is open or closed. It looks closed but the difference is subtle.
Gave it my best shot, agree with you, Michael K...difference is subtle, and hard to see with offered pic...it seems as though it is closed...Spark
73 is a fairly common date, at least I see them always on eBay. Not sure what a fair price is anymore. Shouldn't be too much above melt for average circ. Your looking at a higher grade but with lots of heavy marks in field, so I would consider average circ. You could always ask opinion of value for a specific one. This is my opinion.
Someone is selling this for $1200 - from what i've read and how it looks, it seems to me that's a great price. Any opinions?
Just added photo of reverse. Does 12 hundred sound like a really good deal, or am I just jumping in without learning to dog paddle first?
Sounds like a “motivated seller”, but raw $20 gold pieces do represent a risk. I see no reason to think it’s a fake, but huge majorities of $20 gold are slabbed.
At $1200 (if it's real) there's always that much value in gold anyway. Something is suspicious in this deal.
