Hello Everyone. I'm posting a picture of a group of U.S. coin albums (each with coins). Again, this is open up to any comments/questions/etc. as well as any replies with photos of other album sets similar to this. Thanks. NOW FOR THE PICTURE.....
I also wanted to say that if anyone wants to see any particular album/coin/slab I'd be happy to show it. Hoping to hear from a lot of you. Thanks.
Wow! Show off those trade dollars! I've always wanted to get one (so might as well look, but don't worry i wont touch).
I picked up the GRANDE binders a couple months ago. They display the slabs very nicely and seem to be made of good materials to hold up well. Each binder page holds 9 slabs and you can fit 6 pages into each binder for a total of 54 slabs. Prior to the binders I was using the black double-wide heavy-duty slabs boxes. While you can hold significantly more slabs in the boxes (and in much less space), they do not display as well and are somewhat more difficult to access. My only negative comment about the GRANDE binders is that when you fill up a page with 9 slabs, it can become somewhat heavy for the page. Even though a full page is held in with 4 binder rings, it can still droop somewhat when you hold up the binder. The droop is not significant, but it can cause difficulty when trying to slide the binder back into the slip case. Overall, I’m satisfied with the GRANDE binders and would consider buying more in the future and would recommend them to other collectors if you have the space to store them.
I think the Leuchtthurm/Lighthouse brand albums (like the ones you have there) are better, but I prefer the Eagle brand slab pages. With the Eagle pages, you do not have to remove a whole page from the album and unsnap it open to add or remove a slab like you do with the Lighthouse pages. You can insert coins individually. But Eagle's albums are nothing special - just a glorified three-ring binder, really, with no slipcase. I haven't tried this yet, but I think the "best of both worlds" might be to go with Lighthouse albums and put Eagle pages in them. The only flaw I can see with this idea is that some Lighthouse albums (including those really big Grandes) have a four-ring configuration. But I know some Lighthouse albums do have a three-ring configuration, so theoretically, one should be able to use Eagle pages in those, I would think. Lighthouse brand (3-ring) albums. Eagle brand pages. I may try this in the next few months. If you're reading this thread months from now and wondering about this, tag me and ask how it went. Might be fall before I get around to buying the album and pages, just for show and tell when I do my yearly autumn visit with coin friends in NC. Normally all my slabs spend their time in an Intercept double-row box which fits inside my safe deposit drawer. (The albums won't, quite- I measured.)
I actually like the fact that you have to go through the extra trouble to get the slabs in and out of the pages. If I'm showing the binder to someone, they have to go through quite a bit of hassle to figure out how to remove an item. Also, when you open up those pages it make a very audible popping sound that is easily heard and immediately tells you someone is messing around. So, from a security aspect I do prefer these pages. From the point of view of getting in and out of the pages, I rarely have to do much with them after setting them in place initially, so it's not really a factor to me. For others, I can understand how you might need to often take a slab in and out, but for me they are pretty much set in place for a while. As for inspecting a slab up close, the plastic material in these pages is virtually crystal clear and you really don't even need to remove them to inspect them closely.
Below are what I have in the album for U.S. Trade Dollars. Trade dollars haven't really been much of a focus for me, so that's why there's only a limited number of spaces filled. There are a lot of 'common' pieces that I could get, but I just haven't reached out to get them. Eventually I'll get the trade dollar bug and decide to work on the set. Let me know what you all think, thanks.
Yeah, the Lighthouse pages certainly aren't bad at all. I slightly prefer the Eagle pages, is all. The Lighthouse albums themselves are quite nice.
Can you please post a picture of the half cents, large cents, 2c, 3c and 20c, any bust and seated coins and the early/bust/seated dollar albums.
