Hello, Id like to ask some opinions on this coin. Im having a hard time figuring out if its been cleanedand if so, Id like to return it before time is up. I have 5 more days to decide if Im returning. This coin is much more red than the pictures show, but the luster is kind of weird. And there are very slight scratches that I can see under magnification. I at first thought for sure that the coin has been cleaned, but the closer I look at it, the more Im doubting cleaned. Its just the weird Luster thats throwing me off, and the scratches are very very slight and just a very few on the obverse only. But im still not sure if it was altered a little bit in hopes of making a brown coin, appear more red. And the hard to clean spots are the same tone as the rest of the coin. Spots such as in the writing like the middle of the B and R look like they would be tought to clean. Anyhow, take a look at these pics, any opinions would be appreciated, thank you. Obverse: http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd202/DJP7x0s/1929S.jpg Reverse: http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd202/DJP7x0s/1929Srev.jpg
The color or the luster of the bottom half of the obverse and the center third of the reverse (from ONE down) appears off. It looks like the coin has been rubbed; I also see hairlines above and below LIBERTY (obverse) and in the central area of the bottom portion of the reverse.
I'll say absolutly cleaned and recolored, weather the coloring is intentional or accidental by album storage, this coin has been scrubbed. Looks very similar to the scrubbed Lincolns I sold out of that set I posted here. I hope it was sold to you described as such and you paid accordingly
No, it was sold as a beautiful BU full red lincoln. The pics were really good so I thought I had a good idea of what the coin would look like. The pics also showed alot more red with some nice luster that I dont see on the coin in hand or any of the pics I took. Im also trying to determine if the coin is not the coin pictured. Theres very slight differences between the coin and the pic in the auction where Im starting to doubt its the same coin. But then again I did pay $35 all in all, so even if the coin has been rubbed, its not a bad price.
Well, perhaps we captured different details in our pictures, but comparing my pic to the coin, I catpured more of the true coin. Comparing his pics to the coin, There are details that look quite different. But Ill take back the pic switching, I just noticed the little rim nick above the U in unum and then I realised I can see it in the pics from the listing.
Yes it is same coin and a horrible case of photo manipulation. Looks at the nick above U in UNUM, the mark at 5:00 on the O in ONE, nick and the rear of Abes mouth, etc etc. Same coin. Note 99.9% pos seller, will make it professional if you decide to call him on his misrepresentation. In other words, he'll take care of it if you catch him. You stated above it was sold as a beautiful BU, it was not, you wanted it to be a beautiful BU. Seller made no claims other than crooked pictures .
LOL, thank you for your help. I guess I didnt score a great find at a low price. But yes I suppose I will return it and keep looking. Im going for as many BU full reds as I can afford but soon Im going to have to shoot for MS browns. At the moment, my collection is complete from 1929 to date. Minus 31D, 31S, and now still the 29S. But I do still have a few I would like to upgrade.
That's a good example of how different lighting conditions can change a coin's appearance. The seller chose the lighting conditions that made his coin look the most favorable. I am certain the reverse in the seller's pic is the same as in your pic. I am undecided about the obverse. Are those hairline scratches or are they die polish lines? (I'm guessing hairlines.)
yes thats what I couldnt figure out. I couldnt decide if they were hairline scratches or polished dies. Is there something specific to look for to distinguish the difference???
May I be a bit nosy and ask how it was shipped? $6.00 is awful high for 1 cent coin 1st class. Being as you sorta busted this seller cheating, ask him for a refund on shipping coast as well, if he says no, file a paypal not as described claim and they will get your shipping refunded as well. Some of these high return rate sellers have their shipping jacked up so much, they still profit off of every sale even if returned. Don't let him take your money so easily !!!!
I hate to see anyone, especially a new collector, taken advantage of. That can turn someone against the hobby.
It was shipped to me in a manilla envelope with the brass clip that you fold outwards. No bubble wrap just wrapped in the paper that was printed from the ebay order details. I cant tell how much the shipping actually cost him. It doesnt say when the shipping label is printed through Paypal.
Sounds like a 1 ounce 1st class oversize, about $1.50 and includes a sort of online deliver confirmation as well. Buy the envelope and pocket the other $4..................
